SINGAPORE: An unemployed man who used a scanner-cum-printer to forge dollar notes was sentenced to three years' jail.
26-year-old Mohd Ikram Mohamed Thahir had printed counterfeit S$100 notes and used the fake currency to buy a packet of cigarettes with his girlfriend, 17-year-old Azlynn Elisa Zainal Abidin.
The owner of a Haig Road provision shop realised something was amiss after the couple left with their change of almost $90.
The pair also tried to use another fake note to buy clothes at a shop located at Haig Road.
But the cashier rejected the S$100 note, sensing that it looked fake.
The offences took place in February this year.
Mohd Ikram also faced two other related charges.
His accomplice, Azlynn Elisa, is expected to be dealt with later this week.
The highest penalty for printing, using or attempting to use a fake note is a jail term of 20 years and a fine. - CNA/xq
