Thomson Line to fully open by 2021
Updated 03:07 PM Aug 29, 2012
SINGAPORE - Come 2021, commuters living in the North - such as Woodlands, Sembawang and Thomson - will be able to travel directly to the city area using Singapore's sixth MRT line, the Thomson Line. The 30km-long line will have 22 fully underground stations, four more than was originally planned, and it will include six interchange stations.
The Thomson Line's alignment was announced this morning by Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew after he visited the Telok Ayer Station, which is one of six stations of the Downtown Line Stage 1.
"I am happy to announce that DTL Stage 1 is on track for opening by the end of next year," said Mr Lui. The six stations - Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Downtown, Bayfront, Promenade and Bugis - are currently in the final phase of completion.
Mr Lui said the Thomson Line will commence construction in the third quarter of next year. The line, which will run on a 4-car system, has a projected daily ridership of 400,000 and is expected to serve 160,000 households.
The Thomson Line will be opened in three stages from the north to the south, with the first phase of three stations from Woodlands North to Woodlands South set to begin operations in 2019. The second phase, which comprise six stations between Springleaf and Caldecott, will open a year later, while the final stretch of 13 stations from Mount Pleasant to Gardens by the Bay will begin operations in 2021.
The line will be built at an estimated cost of S$18 billion. The sum is part of the S$60 billion investment in Singapore's rail network that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had announced during Sunday's National Day Rally.
In order to build the line, the Government will be acquiring four full plots of land, two landed properties along Stevens Road and Robin Close, the Thomson Road Post Office and Pearl Centre which is located at Eu Tong Sen Street.
