Singapore artist's work sells for record $3.7 million in Beijing
By Deepika Shetty
Tan Swie Hian has become the most expensive living artist in Singapore.

Last night, a frenzied five-way bid at the Poly Autumn Auction's Modern And Contemporary Chinese Art Evening Sale in Beijing saw Tan's oil and acrylic painting, When The Moon Is Orbed (140cm x 206cm), selling for 18.975 million yuan (S$3.7 million).

Within 10 minutes, the bidding amount had jumped from its initial pre-sale estimate of 10 million yuan to 12 million yuan.

"Several masters, including Vincent van Gogh, did not live to rejoice over such an experience," the 69-year-old artist, poet and writer told The Straits Times. "So the result of this auction is a rare honour. I am lucky indeed and elated at my collector's harvest."

Run-of-the-mill impressionist painting, far from the quality of the masters. Nothing original or cutting edge. It's like writing a play in Shakespearean English, hoping to win the Nobel prize for literature.

Ah tiongs are not noted for their savvy at auctions. One guy did bid a fortune on some vintage wine ....then went on to open the bottle to drink it.

Ah Tiong washing his money.

Why wash money on a piece of junk from which you could never recoup your capital? (Unless there continue to be suckers like this in future auctions.)

I'd rather launder my money by starting a biz or buying an HDB resale flat.

Yes, the nouveau riche have got rich quick without acquiring the taste and sophistication that go with the wealth.

just like the arabs before them.....in the 80s when they came into their petrodollars

painter is 69 years old liao.....................judging from the quality of the painting.............i think he took up painting when he turned 68...............

this kind of SUB-mediocre junk.....................only a birdbrained gong kia will even pay $370 for.................

I'm sure many of us can do a better painting than Mr Tan..

One of this days when I'm free, I'll do a painting of my dog's balls and present it to a rich Ah Tiong.. I'll tell the Ah Tiong that the painting depicts a rural village in China..

ya ok...then when you become multimillionaire dont forget your bros here.

I'm sure many of us can do a better painting than Mr Tan..

Assuming there is laundry involved,

1) The artist will quietly deposit the money in a bank account in Singapore.
2) Ah Tiong will take out a bank loan in China.
3) Guaranteeing the loan will the artist who will pledge the deposit as collateral.
4) At some point of time in the future, the Ah Tiong will default on the loan.
5) The bank will claim the money from the the artist who will forfeit the deposit.

That's if ah tiong want to cheat the bank money.

My thinking is ah tiong got money stuck in china, can't take out. So buy painting at super inflated price. Painter take payment in china, but because foreigner, can take money out. Painter then transfer money to ah tiong overseas account. Painter take a cut.
