GIC, Temasek outperformed global equity markets in 2008
By Pamela Almeda, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 20 January 2009 0026 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's sovereign wealth funds - the Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC) and Temasek Holdings - have performed better than global equity markets last year.

Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said this in a written reply to a parliamentary question from a Member of Parliament.

He said: "Investments by GIC and Temasek have inevitably been affected, like those of other global investors.

"However, their overall value has fallen by less than the decline in global equity markets, as they (GIC and Temasek) maintain diversified portfolios and had taken precautionary actions early in the (financial) crisis to reduce their exposures to the equity markets."

The finance minister, however, did not give details on the extent of losses suffered by GIC and Temasek.

Key global markets took a severe beating last year, with the MSCI World Equities Index falling by 42 per cent.

You can say GIC/Temasek were the top performing portfolio in the world

You can say you crashed Iceland's economy

You can say you own 12 oilfields in Texas

You can say you sold Robinho to Man Citeh

But ....

No independent audit no talk

I have presume this is how Temasek "outperform" the market - simple creative accounting from the sale of Tuas Power and Power Seraya. These assets are fully depreciated and held at zero carrying value on Temasek's balance sheet.

Power Seraya Accounting Treatment -
Sale to YTL for S$4.2b.... all net profit!!
Offset losses from the failed overseas investments = Outperform!!
Ho Ching beats Warren Buffet!!

I am sure there are other national assets held at zero values ready for Temasek to sell to "outperform" the market......

After selling so much assets power stations etc etc ...

Then the balance sheet looks good whether if it's in foriegn hands don't care !

The usual shit; jettison of assets sack a huge number of man-power.
