Did they carry on this practice in the 80s? I believe it stopped in the mid 70s. Quite unhygenic to spit into the drain, imo. No one used a pail to wash down the drain after all the brushing and spitting.

the "standard brushing method" with the pink tablet was a common feature in the early 80s. school canteens had been fitted with long basins.

me plus a couple of boys would squat near to the drains and brush our teeth whilst the rest would accidentally or purposely elbow their friends at the canteen basin.
the fun part was, contests of being able to spit the furthest eventually evolved into who could pee the furthest

demonstration was done by the nurse from the dental clinic, she threatened that if we hadn't brush our teeth her way, she'll have our teeth pulled our slowly and painfully. almost peed in my pants in those days.
