We are currently buying water at 3 sen per 10,000 cubic meters. If Malaysia increases the price by 20 times, they intended to as a matter of fact, it is still cheaper than building another sewage recovery plant at Tuas which has commenced. In order to fund that project costing 6 billion or more citizens have to bear the 30% hike.

Why are we carrying the old baggage of LKY whom had a personal grudge with Malaysian PM?
It’s like you had a quarrel with the noodle seller at your doorstep and you produce your own to spike him.

The excuse is; ‘What if Malaysia cut off the water supply during a war?’

So we need to build vegetable farms, poultry farms and produce all other necessities we are buying from Malaysia?
In times of war anything goes…what about our sovereign investment in Malaysia?
If we distrust them why include Malaysia in ASEAN?
That’s globalization they preached.

The above numbers may not be 100% correct.

sorry, i think price hike is necessary. majority sinkies are spoilt and wasteful. it will help sinkies to mature if matland turn off their tap to lion city.

Agree with you on this, this is to kick their hides with spurs & shaft their behind....they deserve it!...People always misses the POINT..it is 15% 2017, & 15% 2018....by 20%, the crafty whities will find, ways & means to "FIX" the 70%.

There is an article on TOC by Leong Sze Hian about the profits made by PUB over the last few years and he submitted that it has been going on for 53 years. I can confirm that for years PUB was the single biggest contributor to the consolidated fund. It ran into billions. These also included not just water but electricity and gas and the rational for the premium at the very onset was to keep up with the cost maintaining infrastructure as we did not have resources like other countries.

The Govt has been less than transparent and are dishonest by this omission. As Leong correctly points out that they spoke about cost but never ever mentioned the "profit" or surplus. Where did the surplus from 53 years go to?

If the Govt indeed does have a case with merit, should it not reveal this fact. Why the need to omit it.

Nothing much can be done, same as the dust bin that cost 800k to Tax Payers.

Veri veri good ponts by Uncle Leong S H.

Hope uncle leong will also highlight the 2 million plus foreign workers and executives

using our water daily .

add on the growing 16 millions tourists.

that should be quite alot.

Hotels and Construction and support companies should pay more .

Singaporeans in their right frame of mind would not waste water unnecessarily.

These are the culprits.. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/international-visitor-arrivals-up-7

We have 16 millions tourists a year...that's 3 times our population.

Why should we foot the bills of shits others contributed?

good point Rusty

poor madhatter (hated by many here) did grumble that 3 cents was even lower than the amount china charged hongkong, one of its regions :)

i dont think Johore's reservoirs is able to supply Singapore's water needs anymore maybe 50 percent at best, the other 50 percent have to come from more expensive methods like desalination which is energy intensive and sewage water.thanks to 5.6 million population and businesses and commercials using a shitton of resources.

The PAP wants to quadruple the population of Spore. If they want to import all those millions of foreigners, is it fair to expect the "lesser mortals" of Spore to pay for it

The current sewage plant in Changi is unable to cope with the 16 millions who shit here every year and hence the 6 billion Tuas extension is inevitable. Why should Singaporeans pay for processing the shits of others?

Shouldn't the costs be defrayed to the tourist industries...hotels, airport, sats, immigration....whom had profited?

but but prof ng said no way woh...:D

higher per capita income = higher price of water woh :D

Water is not essential item to lose in crisis in 21st century crisis.

Place a foreign bank account in Australia fir standby and more planes are essential to takecfirst flight off if crisis in Singapore.

Then stand from outside watch 2 tigers fight inside in Singapore.

Is toilet paper necessary before you pang sai? Of course must have extra, else lao sai then how?

Water dependency is an established fact long before PAP came to power. It is for this reason that Singaporeans have been paying a premium since independence to cover a wide range of scenarios and not just maintenance and for the usual cost increases.

The contractual end dates are also known. We are also fully aware that the Malaysians can basically say no or raise the price as a punitive measure and this fact is also well known since Independence. Goh Chok Tong when he became PM, created a Scenario Planning Unit in PMO and surely this unit was not tasked to see what the future National dress is going to be.

The 30% increase which came suddenly cannot be backed up by any economic factors or even climate change. The reservoirs in Johor and Singapore have gone down substantially during poor rainfall in the past. Like the sudden occurrence of floods, again no convincing let alone compelling facts have been provide on the climate front.

What has not made known publicly is that we have built the capability to be self-sufficient and this infrastructure has been in place for some time. It will however cost more to increase capacity for this capability and to carry on if circumstances change and it become the permanent model.

I have asked around why the sudden 30% increase out of the blue despite knowing all the facts surrounding the water dependency and the leverage the Malaysian have on us. The short answer happens to be - it was just time to raise it. Apparently it was an arbitrary decision and water tariffs like taxes are now seen as instruments for revenue generation.
