The RETIREMENT thread

Agree.

I once had a friend who was a band boy. However, too much wine, women and song took a heavy toll.

many died young and tragically - inflicted with some diseases. quite sad. they are young and talented. but they do live a full sex life.

Why is this thread not moving? I realized that retirement is a lonely thing. I am getting used to it. Women can work as sales assistant but men can do nothing.

Those who can retire probably have their plans in place. While those who are unable to retire can only dream of it.

A thai friend recently bought himself a condo near a MRT station in Bangkok & is renting it out to expats suggested I do the same thing. Don't really want to become a landlord but thinking about it because property is cheaper in Bangkok & I can always use the rent to pay rentals for a cheaper place somewhere outside Bangkok.

Taste her lips of wine, night and day ? Only trouble is gee whiz ?

I remember living a simple life in Canada. Going somewhere with friends to fish & just walkabout. Touring all over Canada & the US in my 10+ Toyota bone shaker:) Back then I didn't realise how fortunate I was.
Then I returned to Spore & saw how obsessed people were with materialism & power:eek:

You have people like LKY who spend too much time on unimportant things like amassing billions & making life miserable for others e.g. imprisioning people, telling them how many children they can't have, what they can or cannot read, see, or hear,... When you think about it LKY is a sad piece of sh**:o I would actually pity him if he hadn't caused so much grief to so many Sporeans. He's probably the most despised man in Spore.

I think Sporeans are dumb to keep re-electing a party which is making life hard for everyone. Maybe things will change but I think the damage done is irreversible. That's why I'm looking elsewhere for my new fishing hole :)

that's called voting against your self interest. and its suicide. so's retiring in singapore. our retirees are exposed to the SAME rate of expenditure as a working person. there is no countryside here. dont even get me started on the insane medical fees rocket. you do not need residency to retire in some other place.

Agree. I also simple living. Got Heineken atau Chivas and some afternoon delights is enough to satisfy me.:p

wouldn't it be better if your alcohol is the normal price? wouldn't it be wonderful if you could buy a can of beer instead of a can of coke?

I've been out of Singapore for too long and have been thinking about retiring in a couple of years back to SG. I am curious about what Johnny333 and other think. Is it possible to live a simple life in Singapore? Here in Texas, lots of simple thing to enjoy, walk in the park, BBQ with friends, fishing, and even laze around the house playing video games. I think it is going to be harder with the social pressure in SG.

Nobody has time for you in SG. I visit regularly and while I can make business appointments without any problem, social appointments are a lot harder. For example nobody can meet at 6 pm for a drink. Everyone I know says they don't get out of the office till after 7pm.. some as late as 9pm.

It doesn't sound like much of a life to me unless they're busy screwing their secretaries after everyone else has gone home. :p

I think it's a one way street. Once you have tasted the life elsewhere, life in Spore will never be the same again. You will always look back wistfully at the good life you no longer enjoy in Spore:(

You'll lose your mobility because cars are a luxury & there is no such thing as cheap fuel in Spore. You'll lose your privacy & have to live with others in a condo or HDB unit. These apartments are cramped so you'll have to leave your possession in the US. It's also noisy here. I've had to put up with the noise from construction of several buildings for several years. Neighbours also contribute to the noise pollution when they decide to do renovations. The worse is when there is hacking involved:eek:

Be prepared for constant price increases & to receive many unwanted calls from people who want to sell you things. You'll also get plenty of junk mail. You'll spend more time in queues because you have so many bills to pay.

In Canada I could spend time after work socialising after work but in Spore people are likely to be stuck in the office & only have the weekends free. So you might feel lonely here. Expect to spend more even if you are at home because you are likely to use electricity when using your PC, TV, radio,..... You could of course go out but don't forget that public transport is congested & after you have been in Spore for some time it gets boring to visit the same places. That's why I often travel to Malaysia, Indonesia, LOS,...

My ultimate goal is to spend more time outside Spore where it's less crowded, less polluted, ... This has become more urgent because of the PAP's policy to pack more foreigners into Spore.

Make more friends with the angmos who are working in Spore because they are usually the ones who leave on time. Probably because they want to enjoy the PUBs & SPGs:rolleyes:

I'm referring to old friends and ex colleagues. We used to party from happy hours onwards which meant leaving at 5:30 pm to enjoy the 5 to 7 pm happy hour prices.

Now the employed ones have no time and the unemployed ones are too depressed or don't have the money to pay their share. I do offer to buy but many don't want to constantly live off my charity. :p

As I see it making making new friends should be part of one's life. This is something hard to do in Spore. Even finding prospective partners is a big problem here because life is dominated by work.

In places like Canada I often got off at 4pm & had time to spend with friends & it was common to get invited to social events such as house warming parties, birthdays, or some kind of celebration.

yes. many in the rat race buried under a mountain of debt fail to see that without any quality of life, you are just an office drone.
