While bloggers have been a constant thorn in the flesh of the Barisan Nasional government in Malaysia to the event of the ISA being evoked to detain one blogger so as to shut him up, the PAP has no problems whatsoever with Singapore bloggers.
Are Singapore bloggers less critical of the establishment than their counterparts from across the Causeway ? Not necessarily so. Singapore bloggers may not have the resourcefulness of Malaysia Today’s Raja Petra Kamarrudin to dig out the dirty scandals of our “white than white” PAP MPs, but we are nevertheless equally scathing and merciless in our verbal assault on them.
Then why does the PAP feel so comfortable that it is willing to allow greater freedom in cyberspace as proclaimed by PM Lee recently ?
Well, the reason is simple. They have found a fool-proof way to control and manage internet dissent without imposing draconian rules to tarnish its already blackened image.
Our PAP ministers are so much smarter than the BN dudes. That is why they deserve a much higher pay. In this wireless day and age, there is very little the government can do to control what bloggers say about them. The more they try to impose some form of gag order on them, the more these sneaky pests will climb on top of their heads and shit. After all, we Singapore is a first world modern society. How can we resort to such barbaric measures to stifle internet dissent ?
