Head cook Balbir Singh stirs an enormous ladle through a potato and soybean stew, simmering with ghee and coriander in a giant cook pot. A machine that every hour makes 5,000 chapati -- thin, unleavened bread -- whirs long before the sun rises and after it sets.

Singh, 44, lights the flames at 3 a.m. so that 35,000 lunches are ready for pickup by 9 a.m.

"If we serve at this time, God will give us more. It's a give and take system," Singh said.

Bangla Sahib is the largest of New Delhi's 10 gurdwaras, whose kitchens together form a vital part of the city's strategy to feed the poor during the pandemic.

The city government approached the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee just after India's nationwide lockdown began in late March, according to the committee president, Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Bangla Sahib, which usually prepares around half a million meals per week using donated ingredients and equipment, is quickly ramping up to produce six times that many, Singh Sirsa said.

The government sends trucks to pick up the meals each day and distribute them to a network of shelters and drop-off points, but pays nothing for the food.

Singh Sirsa struggles to protect his workers and collect donations to keep the enterprise going. "This is the biggest challenge for me in my entire life," he said.

Anticipating many months of hardship ahead, he appears nightly on the Bangla Sahib's own TV channel to appeal for more donations.

A man from Montreal recently pledged $10,000, another from London offered $100,000, he said. The dining hall heaves with sacks of rice, flour and lentils and cans of oil -- six months of supplies, said Jagpreet Singh, a 27-year-old temple clerk.

"We believe in God. He's giving us this power, so we provide," he said.
So you're basically implying, after you take away the turban, the dagger, the underwear (hahaha) and the steel bangle, your religion is only about putting food in everybody's stomach?

Sikhs come to the forefront when everyone else runs
Even when the Modi Dodis become invisible
Why do Sikhs do that when everyone else only cares for himself.
It is all because of the teachings of Sikhism.
And everyday Sikhs end their prayers and ask God for "Sarbat da bhala" meaning "blessings for everyone"
Next time you see a Sikh leemember the above.

Sarbat da bhala
(Punjabi: ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ (Gurmukhi); sarabata dā bhalā) is the final term in the Sikh prayer called the Ardas. The term outlines one of the most important of Sikh principles and is a point that is repeated in the Sikh Scriptures. The Sikh concept of sarbat da bhala which means "blessings for everyone" or literally "may everyone prosper".[1] This statement is repeated by all practicing Sikhs at least twice daily as part of their Nitnem (daily prayers). This concept is central to Sikhism and forms a very important and essential role in the religious philosophy of the Sikh Gurus.

Free oxygen at Sikh temples as India’s COVID crisis worsens

Gurdwaras in and around New Delhi have arranged ‘oxygen langar’ to provide free oxygen to patients who need it.

An acute shortage of medical oxygen has worsened India’s ferocious second wave of the coronavirus, with hospitals forced to turn patients back as families scramble to arrange oxygen cylinders for their loved ones being treated at home.

Indian social media is replete with accounts of people dying for lack of oxygen, which is being sold at humongous prices in black markets where a cylinder is being sold at as much as 30 times its actual cost.

In such a scenario, at least two gurdwaras or Sikh temples in and around the capital, New Delhi, have arranged an “oxygen langar” to provide free oxygen to the COVID-19 patients who need it.

Oxygen therapy is crucial for severe coronavirus patients with hypoxaemia when oxygen levels in the blood are too low.

A gurdwara in the Greater Kailash neighbourhood of the Indian capital is offering a free refill of oxygen cylinders, Indian media reports said.

Another gurdwara in Ghaziabad on the outskirts of New Delhi has set up a facility within premises where about 80 people can take oxygen at a time.

The gurdwaras have also set up helplines for people in need of oxygen and other medical emergencies.

Sikh temples in the city and other parts of India have also made arrangements for free home delivery of food for COVID-19 infected people.

Vaisakhi, the holiest day of the year in the Sikh faith is fast approaching. To mark this day, let’s take a statistical snapshot of Sikhs in Canada.

During the 2021 Census of Population, 771,790 people in Canada reported belonging to the Sikh faith and could be found in every province and territory.

Canada has the second largest Sikh community in the world following India. More Sikhs live in Canada than in England and Australia combined.

Ontario (300,435) had the largest Sikh community in Canada in 2021, followed closely by British Columbia (290,870). Alberta (103,600) had the largest Sikh community on the Prairies, while Nova Scotia (4,730) had the largest such community in Atlantic Canada and Yukon (385) had the largest one in the territories.

Just under one-third of the Sikhs living in Canada called the census metropolitan area of Toronto home, while over one-quarter lived in Vancouver in 2021.

Over two-thirds of the Sikhs living in Canada at the time of the 2021 Census of Population were first generation, meaning they were born elsewhere and chose to make Canada their home.

Approximately 1 in 50 of the farm population (or 8,960 people) reporting a religious affiliation in the 2021 Census of Agriculture were Sikhs.

How have Sikhs come to hold a prominent position in Canada?

Experts say their networking through gurdwaras is a major reason for the community's massive success in Canada. They also collect grants in the form of a Sikh fund and a large part of this money is spent in funding election campaigns.

Out of the 388 MPs in Canada, 18 are Sikhs. Of these, eight seats are completely controlled by Sikhs and they play a significant role in 15 others. This is the reason why no political party wants to displease the community.
