The most unfortunate TOP scholar was a Hokkien Minnan. He had superb ability and awarded TOP scholar. Unfortunately for him, all 51 scholars awarded that year were all southern Chinese. And the main exam invigilators were all southern chinese.

Basically the northern chinese were not happy and went to complain and protest claiming unjust results. The Ming emperor was furious and did an investigation and found no unjust results as those that didn’t win had lousy submissions for the exam.
