In Singapore, you cannot be a great man unless you suffered early in life. It becomes a badge of honour. Cannot speak English, grew up in a house with zinc roof, mother washerwoman, no father, humble background, give tuition, parents hawkers and they helped at the stall while doing their homework at the sametime etc etc etc......

So what becomes of kids that grew up a in a decent home? Do they become jailbirds, scum of the earth, lepers, delinquents, or just society's failures.

Children from a wealthy family and with highly educated parents are likely to do well in society. That's to be expected.

You would expect less from children of "jailbirds, scrums, lepers... and society's failures" to become "great". That's why they are "great" if they succeed - against all the odds. They should be admired.

If the ex-Chief Justice were to remain in Ipoh, he will never become a Chieft Justice. That's for sure.
Malaysia's loss is Singapore's gain. He even won Pedra Branca for Singapore, even though the island is many kilometres from our nearest land. Give this man a Tiger!

Please give me a break. I know people with those challenges but they don't keep repeating it and neither do they get the Toa Payoh brothel to keep banging the drum on these things.

U will expect more of this sort of stories coming from the media. To emphasize that we are meritocracy society that one can made it in life regardless of their social background... The government wants our media to spin all these positive tales as well as anything to foster FT integration from now till 2015 (why not 2016 since that election year?) That the duty of the media as part of Public Service Broadcast (PSB)

"In 1992, he was appointed Attorney-General of Singapore. Acting in this capacity in 1997, he submitted an opinion to the Government of Singapore that although the Parliamentary Elections Act forbade unauthorized persons to loiter within 200 metres of polling stations on polling day, this did not apply to unauthorized persons who were inside the stations."

Wah, he is english still fail. Who is actually doing the lip synch when he open mouth? How much did he pay to get his cert and bar har?

You may be forbidden to loiter around a durian tree when the durians are dropping, but that doesn't mean that the durian in your stomach comes from that durian tree. It makes sense to a lawyer. Theft case dismissed.

What it means is that the laws are not precise or inclusive enough but subject to interpretation.
It takes a great mind to interpret it to your advantage. Shylock can have his pound of flesh, but not a drop of blood in it; he must cut precisely ONE pound - no more, no less - or else all his lands and goods will be confisticated.

You may despise the have-nots and these reports may be annoying or they constitute a drive towards national masochism or whatever you may be inclined to think but the underlying moral of these rags-to-riches stories is that as long as you work hard you can succeed even if your family background is humble.

80% of the Singaporeans are poor and live in public housing unlike you people so they need some form of encouragement from the government every now and then to do their best and improve their lives.

Those decent family success stories are boring, predictable, expected, even for movies or cartoons and look at you. You may have a lot of things handed to you from the day of your birth but what has seriously become of you and most others like you? Pretty much like precious nothing right?

thanks for pointing this out. government sense the discontent with the institution of meritocracy and is ramping up the media to spin one sided stories of meritocracy.

sure, 4 out of 10 heartlanders make it to top primary schools, but how about the other 6 in 10 who don't make it?

That international court is controlled by the superpowers, and they prefer Singapore to continue control of Pedra Branca because that little rock is important for Singapore to continue the control of the critical sea lane leading to South China Sea. Losing the control of this narrow sea lane to Malaysia is not ideal, because of perceived political instability and past actions of a particularly outspoken ex-PM up north. This is the real reason why Singapore won that case. Nothing to do with the so-called legal talents of the three fellows.

Even if Singapore send three new law graduates to argue the case, Singapore will still win control of Pedra Branca.

You are very discerning indeed.
Weren't you the chap who came after the Bangla had left and kept on complaining that you were having this constant painful yellowish discharge below?
And then begging not to cause any pain to your little brother when the swab stick was inserted to take a sample of the abnormal discharge?

I see you are a little braver now on learning the discharge from the STD was non-fatal, provided you continue to take the medicine and go for checkup regularly.

Ah, you must be the other chap who came to the clinic with the earlier chap.
Our record actually showed that you visited the clinic several times before and also suffered the same distress. Little wonder you are so familiar with the place. It's a good thing to refer your companion for us to check - just in case. He needs your support.

You need to rethink. If your children or siblings have behaved well in 4 out of 10 instances, do you keep on harping on the 6 wrongs or try to encourage them with the 4 rights? I think the latter is more effective.

On the other hand if you have morons like Deboner and Narong who did nothing right, by all means, screw them upside down and inside out.
