The "deluge" has begun. And it is not wet. People are now betting that the Govt will spend much more to widen Stamford Canal at much greater cost rather than admit that its the Barrage and carry out supplementary works by either increasing pump capacity or adding gates or widening the existing gates. The immediate short term solution is to lower the level in the reservoir significantly so any flash flood is countered with enough receiving capacity.
Widening Stamford Canal will increase the water holding capacity below street level and acts as secondary reservoir. But it will costs much more and take more time.
I tend to think that they will do what they did nearly 20 years ago when the colour of the newly issued $2 note was similar to the $10 note and caused confusion among the elderly and people complained to the press. Lee Hsien Loong at that time refused to admit that it was a mistake and said that people will get used to it. The furore died down and few months later the colour of the $2 note was changed with no further mention.
So what do you think the Govt will do ?
