Thailand is screwed. Once you have gov trying to get in the way of free market principle, the mkt will be screwed.

Why not $20? Dumb socialists. If workers wanna work for peanuts, what right does the government have in interfering? The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Thaksin's sister made plenty of campaign "promises" to win the elections.

We'll now see if she can deliver on these promises:rolleyes:

I have no idea what the cost of living is in Thailand, but some minimum needs to be set in order for a wage earner a dignified salary for full time work in order for the worker to put in his/her best and take home enough money for the family to survive. If not, the alternative is crime.

It puts humanity to shame if all the MBAs and pHds boast of how much they make, the condos they live in, while the rest of the working class cannot make enough to make ends meet.

Cheers!

this set min wage is actual call inflation, it will do the poor no good, if inflation goes sky high.

Dear friends please don't be so negative, we business people in Thailand thinks this is a good move for the overall good of the Thai economy. How? Just simply put it: From the business owner side we will be forced to improve productivity by looking into ways like more automation and yes may be even start to sack some people who skive. This is the reality of life. Its only those incompetent business owners and incompetent politicians like Abhishit who complain about this. Go ask the big boys and SMEs who are doing well and many agree this is a good move to improve themselves and at the same time make their workers happy. Secondly from the economy point of view, when your workers are happy and have more money they spend more and this increases demand and spurs the economy and many companies will benefit from this.

You are listening from the horses mouth now friends, not Democratic Party negative propaganda from Bangkok Post, Nation and especially MCOT my goodness. Many corporations and SMEs are looking forward to this as far as my contacts and partners are concern. We may need some time to adjust and Yingluck did give us time.

The whole problem with Thailand politics is the class war between the amats (elites) against the phrai (slaves, servants, poor). The amats want the phrai to remain phrai and came up with sufficiency economy to bullshit them, but this belongs to another story.

Let's put it this way. Minimum wage when implemented is usually benchmarked to basic cost of living against a fair and honest 8 or 9 hours or labour. Without minimum wage, the workers are at the mercy of the employers, take it or leave even if it can't cover basic living costs. The unions are on the government and employers' side. They have plenty of foreign workers who can afford to work for the low wages since they're not buy HDB flats. If you can't make ends meet, then ask your wife and children and even parents to work too and chip.

The argument that minimum wage legislation drives businesses away or into bankruptcy holds no water at all. If your business can't afford a wage for an employee live in basic dignity, you should be bankrupted, get the hell out of business and look for a job yourself.

Well said. I have about 145 workers, I mean people in factory and delivery and store, my partners and I are looking forward to pay them more although they are already above minimum wage, everything has to go up although not required by legislation. We are expecting to have a bunch of very happy workers come October and they will surely work harder. Even the rest of the staff like admin, finance, customer care will also all go up and sales people will have new challenges with new adjustments.

Its those no-idea fuckers like AbhiSHIT who had sold his soul to the devil that's preaching disasters.

The way I see it is that the minimum wage thing have to start somewhere. Ex sinkees boast at how much mickey dees pays in Oz but implementing minimum wage or raising it in se asia is a no no because it hurts their own pockets. Maids would cost more, hawker food would cost more etc etc.

Asians would rather show off their bmws and mercedes benz than pay a few more dollars for chicken rice. I would rather pay a high cinema ticket or buy an expensive sandwich and at the same time know that most of it goes to their staff wages than to pay less and most of the money goes to the landlords(PAP goverment) and shitty sinkee bosses.

Even with the minimum wage in mudland and thailand, it would still be cheaper than in sinkeeland.

One more thing I forget to add, in Thailand if workers get more and they spend more what happen to the government? They will be able to collect more taxes. And these additional taxes can be use for more government investments into the country.

There is minimum wages in Canada which i stayed for awhile in and the things there are more cheaper than in sinkeland. Go figure.. A steak dinner with beer cost less than 15 bucks, a can of 5 litre housepaint about 30 bucks, marble floor tiles about 4 bucks for 2feet tile. Wallmart, Costco, Highland farms, Home Depot have items less than what it costs in sinkeeland. Household items can be bought at suppliers price in bulk which is way cheaper than in sg or even mudland.
Some cinemas have unlimited topups for drinks and snacks. Yup the ticket cost more but at least the money goes to the staff more than the employers.

the businessmen can choice not to hire too many staff. Go to the shopping centre in europe, you hardly see any sale staff, why? because cost of hiring in high. unemployment does not help the poor in thailand.

Will there be an influx of immigrants into the country for cheap labor? Singaporeans can take up the roll.
