Once a upon a time, people on the ground were talking about a man whom they perceived to be one who undertook the mission and responsibility of a government minister out of a sense of duty and not for prestige and remuneration. A man from a privileged background and with a respected and well earned record of being the best and most admired Navy chief as attested by so many ex-Navy personnel.
I remember that I chanced on meeting him arriving on the first day of his job as a minister at the old Treasury Building. Separated by a glass wall, our eyes met, I gave him a thumbs up and he returned it with a wave and grin. A good few years later, while driving along Holland Road in the morning, saw him jogging. Alone! To me then. it says a lot about the character make-up of the man.
Sad it is that he is now, linked irreparably to the ruling junta forever.
