Move to ease congestion at Woodland Checkpoint causes jam at BKE
SINGAPORE: A three-month trial of a new traffic diversion scheme to ease congestion at the Woodlands Checkpoint has resulted in another jam further away.
Cars from Woodlands Centre Road going to the Woodlands Checkpoint will now not be allowed to turn right into the Checkpoint from 4pm on weekdays. They are also not allowed to do so between 10am and 10pm on weekends and public holidays.
But not all drivers are familiar with the change which kicked in on Monday at 4pm.
Apart from signboards, the police have also had to deploy some 20 officers to distribute flyers.
Although enforcing this alternative route has eased the jam at Woodlands Centre Road, motorists have found themselves stuck in another jam at the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).
Police say they will monitor the situation and if there is a need, they will make further adjustments.
Currently, motorcycles and heavy vehicles are restricted from using Woodlands Centre Road to access Woodlands Checkpoint at all times.
However, public buses and school buses are not affected.
