Hindi's popularity growing in Singapore: Minister

Singapore, July 25 (PTI) Learning Hindi as a language is becoming popular in the country with some considering it for understanding Bollywood music and others for its importance in the backdrop of India's rise as an economic power, Singapore's Education Minister Ng Eng Hen has said.

"This is, no doubt, a testament to the burgeoning popularity of Bollywood. For some, it is simply so that they can better understand the lyrics of popular (Hindi) songs.

Beyond its cultural role, however, many recognise that Hindi is an economic asset. Especially with the rise of India," Ng said while addressing the Hindi Centres Day here yesterday.

He applauded the demand for the Society's Hindi courses by non-Hindi speaking people and the growing interest towards the language.

Ng also assured the government's support to Hindi learning as well as Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu, saying these were being promoted as mother-tongue languages in addition to Tamil.

Well they all seem to speak out in unison about racism in this country.

Last i heard this country didn't enslave anyone or beat anyone up simply cos they were not from the majority race yet it has never stopped them from complaining about any stupid misgivings, any chinese that so much as looks at a keling wrongly is probably going to be accused of racism.

It's the southern Indians e.g. Raja and devan Nair, who have played a significant role in building this nation, not the Northern Indians. The Northern Indians are johnny-come-latelys who are bloodsuckers, e.g that Shekkar guy. Just because they are here now in large numbers, they think they can influence the PAP leadership to push their agenda. Very soon, they will demand Hindi to be another official language. And our pliant PAP may just buckle. If these Northern Indians are any bloody good, they shld stay behind and make India better than the mess it is today. Instead, they turned quitters and chose the easy way out - come to a Singapore that is already made for them by Tamils (of cos with Chinese and Malays and eurasians etc). These Bollywood types are fucking snobs and look down on their poorer but harder-driven Tamils.

The southerners are called the dravidians. They are the original settler of India until they were push southwards by the Aryan, hence this is where they are today.

India is not a united nation at all. The people are too diverse.

You are right. Ever since the colonial days, there has been a gap between Northern and southern indians. Recent reports of honour killings will remind us that unless it is watched carefully, they will import the caste problems here. Indians can't even marry someone from the same village unless the couple want to brave the wrath of the villagers. Aryan Indians despise Dravidians; Indians kill own villagekin..So they are all running away to SIN thinking they can run away from the problem..but they cant shake the caste and customs off. Singapore is now embracing Indian madness, thks to LKY!
