雲林縣消防局下午2時5分左右接獲報案，麥寮六輕工業區台化芳香烴三廠發生氣爆，立即調派麥寮等多個分隊、各式救災救護車輛前往搶救，研判是LPG管線去乙丁烷塔破裂引起，救災人員均穿著防護裝備，火勢於下午4時6分控制，幸未傳出人員傷亡。
氣爆事故發生後，雲林縣長張麗善第一時間趕抵六輕關心與了解災情，並對災害發生後續處理指示成立事故調查小組，3天內提出發生原因與真相，並要求六輕進行管線總體檢，提出具體管線汰換等相關工程。

雲林縣消防局在下午2點4分接獲報案，六輕工業區台化芳香烴三廠發生爆炸事故，連在5、6公里外的麥寮橋頭地區居民都感受到明顯震動。消防局派遣多個分隊積極搶救，初步研判是液化石油氣（LPG）管線去乙丁烷塔破裂引起，火勢於下午4時6分控制，幸未傳出人員傷亡。
雲林縣長張麗善在第一時間前往六輕關心、了解災情，並對災害發生後續處理指示成立事故調查小組，3天內提出發生原因與真相，事故發生範圍內，調查報告出爐前，勒令停工。並要求六輕進行管線總體檢，提出具體管線汰換等相關工程。
縣府將依空污法第32條重罰500萬元，同時，這次爆炸若造成鄰近漁塭、民宅損害，將由六輕負全責修復。鑑於六輕為亞洲最大石化廠區，當負起企業責任，研議成立國際級災害應變小組，嚴謹做好相關工安工作。
環保局已經在下午3點7分於事故現場的下風處進行鋼瓶採樣，包括空氣品質及水質的檢測，這些汙染採樣將會送往環保署認證機構進行分析，以做為後續告發處分依據，或民眾求償參考。
另外，縣府農業處第一時間已請漁業科到現場附近了解漁塭狀況，目前未發現有落塵情形，將持續追蹤。
台塑六輕麥寮管理部副總經理陳文仰表示，事故發生時，立即啟動廠區消防搶救作為，並通報消防局，幸未傳出人員傷亡；台化芳香烴三廠將暫時停止運作，全面檢修管線，另外，後續會調查影響的範圍，並補償受波及的居民。

雲林縣消防局提供的資料顯示，這起工廠火警位於台化芳香烴三廠，消防單位共出動台西、東勢、麥寮及北五4分隊的15位人員，加上6部消防車、2輛救護車前往搶救；根據消防隊提供的重要記事，原先發現六輕有濃煙與爆炸後的震動，今日下午2點25分時就在南門看見火光，因此緊急調派更多人手支援，而後發現LPG管線去丁烷塔破裂。
