Iranian Paralympic athlete refused to shake Duchess of Cambridge's hand 'for cultural reasons' at medal ceremony

An Iranian athlete refused to shake the Duchess of Cambridge's hand after she presented him with his discus silver medal on Sunday.

The Royal was warmly received on the podium by Paralympic GB's gold medal winner Aled Davies and Chinese bronze medallist Lezheng Wang - but when it was Mehrdad Karam Zadeh's turn to step up, the 40-year-old failed to offer a hand to the Duchess, clutching them close to his chest.

His decision not to shake hands with the Duchess was likely to have been a result of Iranian cultural convention which bans such contact between unrelated men and women. The Duchess appeared to have been briefed on the situation, because she did not offer her hand either.

The Ukrainian athlete who was ordered to give back her discus gold medal because of a scoring blunder did not turn up to the rearranged ceremony at the Olympic Stadium this morning.

Mariia Pomazan stayed away in apparent protest as the gold she had been presented with on Friday was awarded to China's Wu Qing.

The 23-year-old was demoted to silver and the place on the podium reserved for the second-placed athlete remained empty.

She admitted yesterday she was 'very, very angry' after losing her gold in the F35/36 class, with organisers announcing the wrong medals had been awarded. Points rather than distance determined the final standings in the combined-class event.

She revealed those feelings had been behind her shot put gold yesterday.

All three athletes who received medals on Friday were asked to return them, with an appeal by the

Ukrainian National Paralympic Committee for the original result to stand rejected by the jury of appeal.

An International Paralympic Committee spokesman said: 'Since Friday we have tried to investigate if an alternative could be found that suited all parties that was within the rules. This has not been possible.'

Blades of fury: Paralympic posterboy Oscar Pistorius loses 200m final but claims rival's longer 'legs' gave him unfair advantage

'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius said sorry today for the timing of his bitter post-race outburst in which he suggested Paralympic rival Alan Fonteles Oliveira unfairly used longer artificial legs to seal gold in the T44 200 metres.

In an embittered televised interview Pistorius claimed he was at a disadvantage because rival competitors were using longer carbon fibre prosthetic blades - giving them a greater stride.

But there appeared to be little sympathy today for the man who has become a household sporting name in recent months and symbolizes for many the remarkable determination and ingenuity of the Paralympic movement. Pistorius said his complaint was aimed not at his rival, but at the International Paralympic Committee for failing to act over the length of some athletes' blades after Oliveira, wearing noticeably longer ones, came from way back Sunday night to pip him at the line.

The Brazilian took gold in 21.45 seconds, leaving Pistorius to settle for silver, coming home in 21.52 seconds with stunned quiet from the 80,000 spectators greeting the result that Pistorius went on to describe as 'ridiculous'.

Ironically, Pistorius has faced similar opposition himself from some who claim he should not be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes as he did last month in the Olympics - because his own blades could in theory give him some sort of advantage. 'We're not running in a fair race here,' he told Channel 4 moments after the shock finish. 'I can't compete with Alan's stride length.

'Some athletes make themselves unbelievably high - the knee heights are four inches higher than they should be.

'We have spoken to the IPC but it has fallen on deaf ears. Guys are coming from nowhere to run ridiculous times.'
