Teenage hockey goalkeeper Bill Wolfson Lianie’s sudden death yesterday (6 November) shocked and saddened the hockey community.
The 14-year-old Sarawakian boy was a trainee in the national hockey development programme (NHDP).
He complained about feeling uneasy after taking his bath and collapsed in his room at the Perak National Sports Council hostel around 7am.
According to Free Malaysia Today, a post-mortem revealed that he died of a brain haemorrhage.
It was Bill’s dream to play for the national team, according to Malaysia’s longest-serving hockey goalkeeper S Kumar.
Kumar said he took a liking to the happy boy whom he first met at the goalkeeping skills clinic he conducted.
Bill realised his biggest dream to take a picture with his idol Kumar on Saturday before passing the next day.
Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) deputy president S Shamala said she couldn’t imagine what Bill’s mother must be going through.
I can’t imagine what the mother, whose life story would break your heart even more, must be going through. The words ‘deepest condolences’ to his mother cannot really express the magnitude of exactly how we all feel.

Fans, players and hockey officials observed a one-minute silence for Bill before the match between Malaysia and South Africa at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup yesterday.
