Local supporters were "conveniently" abandoned in favour of their own people. The fleeing Americans had no place for their supporters. They were left to die along with thousands of Amerasians - innocent products of coital relations between Yankees and Vietnamese women.
The same thing happened when the Japanese took over Singapore and British troops ran onto vessels in our Harbour Board and naval base with their families, abandoning the locals who were their loyal supporters in uniform and other services.
Now the North Vietnamese won the Indo-China conflict and re-united Vietnam. Like the French, the Americans were booted out too.

While it's true that the Western nations ran when things didn't look to good for them back then, do remember that Indonesia and Malaysia are nothing like the USSR or China and aren't even toe to toe with Vietnam. A single Japanese division alone can handle BOTH Indonesia and Malaysia put together, win and fight many more of them. When the US left Vietnam, it was because they were fighting with Vietnamese who are the same people they fight for. They were never going to win. Britain was facing a losing battle. Yes, cowardly and shows that they didn't care much for Singaporeans, but they were being defeated by a much superior force. Indon and Malaysia together is child's play for the US and its allies today. As terrible as it sounds, the US is one of the reasons why Singapore is safe today. To have their ships and planes docked in Singapore is actually reassuring.

Nations spy on one another, even their closest neighbours. Everyone knows and accepts that.
What is not on is spying on your neighbour/ally/friend for a foreign power, especially one who is not seen as friendly to your alliance (ASEAN).
How would the US feel if it found out that the UK was spying on the Americans for the KGB?
So what? Australia, South Korea and Japan also spy for the US. The US isn't just a foreign power to the 4 countries, including Singapore, it is an ally. And allies help allies. Indonesia and Malaysia should just hold their tongue since they rely on the US and its allies as well, and brown nose them whenever possible to get funding and help. Those 2 countries are merely neighbors, hostile neighbors and not allies or friends. Singapore's best intentions of helping both financially and infrastructure has obviously never been repaid.
If they were given the same situation as Singapore, they would do it unconditionally, without guilt and would defend their actions. They have no right to talk. And the US is very friendly to ASEAN, think of the TPP. Japanese reports show that Malaysia's policies are extremely Anti-US, and while they want the benefits of the TPP, they have nothing to offer and their values totally go against the alliance. But the US and allies are willing to let that go. Indonesia should quit whining and move on.

It is okay to gather intelligence for yourself.
However, it is not okay to spy on your neighbours for the USA.
That is why Singapore is a stooge of the USA.
It is OK, to promote regional safety. Australia, SK, Japan do it as well. That's because they are allies. Stooge? Isn't Indonesia a stooge of the US. Just making mountains out of ant hills, very Muslim, very Indon.
At the end of the day, Singapore relies on the US and its allies for protection. Not Indonesia and not Malaysia who are more likely to destroy Singapore if they could.
