SINGAPORE - For being "too talkative", a class of Primary 2 pupils from Raffles Girls' Primary School (RGPS) were made to stand for 15 minutes during every assembly.

This went on for three months, and raised the ire of a parent. The school's vice-principal has now admitted that the punishment was "excessive".

Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday that the incident came to light when the father of one of the girls heard what was happening and visited the school to see for himself.

"Three months is too long for any parent to accept. I believe the rest of the parents do not know about this," he was quoted as saying.

The punishment reportedly began in July, when a teacher chided the class of 29 pupils for talking too much during assembly. They were then made to stand from 12.30pm to 12.45pm during every assembly, before being allowed to sit like the rest of their schoolmates.

RGPS vice-principal Choong Pek Lan told My Paper that the punishment was "excessive", and was not commonly used by teachers at the school. Both the school and the Education Ministry are looking into the matter.

MP Baey Yam Keng, a member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education, described the punishment as "embarrassing for the students". But he added that schools should not shy away from disciplining pupils who misbehave. "There needs to be a balance," he said.

teachers are to be respected and not feared, try not get the two emotions mixed up. much as i respected my teachers when i was young, i challenged them on many occasions whenever possible

Not only is the VP sleeping, but all of the bloody lot of so called 'teachers' of this school are also sleeping - from the principal right down to the lowest teaching assistant. If it only took a non teacher parent to realise that such a punishment is 'excessive', then obviously all the teachers of the school share the same mentality that such a punishment is all right and did nothing, for three whole bloody months, then have to have it pointed out by an outsider before being corrected.

The responsibility of this fiasco rests especially squarely upon the principal who does not even have a sense of balance on the issue of punishment versus teaching students about discipline or complying with rules.

that's why teachers should be allowed to cane or slap the kids. one slap across the face or whacked by the cane one time. you'd think the rest of the kids dared to continue with their talking? could save 3 months of standing

The worrying thing here is not the punishment meted out but the vice principal who has serious myopia and needs to see a eye specialist ASAP before her eye sight deteriorate further and totally up lorry. Otherwise pls explain to me how the fuck she only realized the punishment is excessive after three months when they have been standing there for 15 minutes during every assembly.
