Paramedics were unable to save her. A post-mortem conducted at St. Pancras mortuary gave the cause of death as multiple injuries. An inquest will be opened and adjourned on October 4.
It is believed she died on her birthday.
Miss Tan is a former student of Raffles Girls' School (RGS) and Raffles Junior College, and is the youngest daughter of playwright and research fellow Mr Tan Tarn How, 49, and his wife, a dentist.
A vehicle has been recovered, according to a statement released by New Scotland Yard.
A 50-year-old man has also been arrested and remains in custody at a police station in North London.
According to a UK newspaper, the police say it is possible that the driver was not aware he had hit Miss Tan.
The victim's belongings - a handbag containing a wallet, mobile phone and student ID - was found in the road 150 metres from the body, outside Belsize Park Tube station.
Police are investigating the case by reviewing CCTV footage.
A CCTV footage from a shop near the station showed a black saloon car braking abruptly around the time of the accident.
Police cordoned off the road stretching a kilometre to find more clues.
