ST Engineering Autonomous Bus Development Unit: Throws in the towel.

https://landtransportguru.net/st-engineering-autonomous-bus-exit/
Me thinks it because of too many fake foreign talents and too many cyclist , jay walkers, motorcycles etc on roads (due to population increase etc) that LTA and ST Engineering just never noticed, from their ivory tower comfortable seats......
-----------------

ST Engineering has discontinued its autonomous bus development efforts in late 2022, citing the ‘significant’ financial resources required.

As announced by ST Engineering in February 2023 with the release of its financial results and annual report, the local engineering firm had wound up its Autonomous Bus unit that was started in late 2015. Although ST Engineering claims significant technological progress has been made, further technical and operational milestones have yet to be achieved. The company felt that the financial resources required for this ongoing endeavour are substantial, and the company had thus decided to withdraw from further autonomous bus development

Just like the COVID-19 vaccine that was jointly developed by Arcturus Therapeutics/Duke-NUS called LUNAR-COV19 or ARCT-021, now no sound at all

SG has talent? Harharhar.
Can't even build an autonomous system!
You can't con everyone.

Green Future only can use bicycle?
Probably will be a default option.

Think without shared bicycle, STE/LTA thought their AV can charge $40/ passenger ride after midnight. https://mothership.sg/2023/02/cycle-home-clubbing/

Ends up, $3 ubiquitous 24/7 rental bicycle can get people home.

So since 2017, ( https://www.channelnewsasia.com/sin...-fall-singapores-bike-sharing-industry-892931 )the STE/LTA AV Bus business model was already doomed for financial failure if not still birth.

What is bad is that it took them 6 years after 2017 to discover how mistaken they were.

This is not the first time that shared bicycle services have pwn LTA too.

Innovation and creativity cannot thrive in a totalitarian regime. You might as well ask fishes to swim, and pigs to fly.

Nah, shared bicycle are not the innovation of a totalitarian regime.

Don't even need to get overly political here.

Those LTA/STE directors were just greedy/pig headed, cos think by now, everyone knows that the greater the population (road usage), the more difficult for AV to navigate through, not least without a reserved rail/path.

Maybe it made business sense in 2015, before shared bicycle apps were available. But shared bicycles.took the world by storm in 2016-2017 etc, so this substituted public transport a large part. And those telegram illegal pirate taxis also.

The only possibly reliable AV I have ever seen is on USA interstate highway where the road is almost totally clear and big trucks haul cargo across Interstate borders at relatively slow speed due to their immense size/weight.

It is near impossible to use AV on crowded streets used by assortment of vehicles from bicycles to trucks. And no AV can beat a human driver and in Singapore, drivers are uncivilised/monsters.

So it was for most part a Sisyphean task of put an AV on Singapore roads.

If they succeeded, it would be jackpot, but that chance would probably be a small fraction of the likelihood striking TOTO first prize.

So as expected, they threw in the towel, but IMHO they took far too long to do so, perhaps the LTA directors and managers all don't know how to cycle, that's why they clung on to their AV ambitions for way far too long.

You've just proven my point. Refer also to the Sinkie football scene.

Sinkie PAP is just a mini me, diluted version of the Tiong CCP, minus the Great Firewall and some grandiose geopolitical ambitions. That's all. The parallels are exact.

Absolutely right. Don't forget that the government-linked companies are just CCP SOEs by another name. Maybe a bit more efficient, but just as wasteful. They stifle the development of local businesses too.
