Maybe you are not Chinese (which I doubt), but if you are then really I'd say shame on you for complaining about having to learn your own language, calling it hardship and all that. The way Chinese is being taught in Singapore is very simplified, not like what it is in the older days or even in China itself.

What has being chinese got to do with learning Mandarin? There are many "Chinese" who don't understand mandarin & get by with their dialect.

Many of my "Chinese" schoolmates took Malay rather than Chinese. I guess they & their parents didn't buy into being "forced" into learning a language. Poor things they are all now "struggling" in Aust, NZ, Canada, USA,...

You forget that LKY had to learn mandarin & he admitted his grandchildren were having problems with mandarin maybe thats why one of them is studying at the American School in Spore, don't you think it's shameful that this option is not open to other Sporeans

Yes, not only simplified characters (Singapore is the ONLY advanced country in the world since the 80s to follow China's writing system.....

If I remember, Spore yoyoed between simplified to the traditional writing system. Only a country with a "politicised" educational system would ignore the hardships its policy changes caused.

You learn Chinese not to just communicate with bus drivers and the service staff from the People's Republic of China, but also, to speak with other Chinese wherever you go....

Guess I was "unlucky" that my job required only travel within Asia(minus China) . Never had any communication problems. FYI many Indonesian Chinese don't understand mandarin Same, same with Malaysian & HK Chinese

who call their own defectors apples in the same context. Even Westerners themselves I do not think many would applaud or respect you so much for speaking their language well.....

Why must Spore politicise "Languages"

FYI, most "westerner" don't care what language I speak We talk about so many other important things that the topic of language is never even brought up. Only in Spore is it a hot topic.

Decent jobs offered by MNCs for speaking English? Maybe. If you are working to serve the Chinese market and Chinese customers .....

How many Sporeans are working at MNCs catering to PRC customers Many of the lower echelon jobs are held by the PRCs. There are of course Sporeans in upper management but communication is in english.

The MNC I'm with had the Spore staff setup the manufacturing operations in China but once it was done, they laid off most of the Spore staff. You see the company found it cheaper to move ALL the manufacturing to China

Emigrate to these Western countries and be looked down upon there? And live there as second or even third class citizens and suffer? I beg to differ seriously.

Just take a look at the hundreds of thousands of ex-Sporeans who've left. How many do you know that have returned to Spore

I have friends & relatives who are ex-Sporean who do come back as an FT but they leave when their contracts are ended.

I do have old friends who come back to Spore for holidays but if they didn't still have friends & relatives they wouldn't even bother coming back to Spore

I believe people should be proud of their own culture and race and not be so gungho about all things Western including their decadent ideas of living.

In the 1st world there is freedom of choice unlike in Spore. The gov't is not going to interfere with your choices. In fact the gov'ts can't abuse its citizens & a gov't like the PAP wouldn't exist.

The irony is that for 99% of Singapore Chinese, their mother tongue is actually Hokkein, Teochew, Cantonese etc - that of the South Chinese. I can't help laugh when people talk about preserving culture, roots etc and have no clue what their mother tongue.

Just because one cunning Hakka decided to level the political playing field for himself , we got idiots talking about culture, roots etc. Mind you, China was in Communist hands and economic advantage was not in the equation then.

Imagine talking about being "ashamed" of one culture but has no clue what the mother tongue is.

Very sad to see this state of affairs in Singapore.

It took 30 years or more to get the population fluent in the English so that we can all communicate in one common language. And now, all that work and effort is thrown down the drain because of the influx of PRCs and some Chinese chauvinists.

How sad.

But then again, it took generations to get the people of Singapore to learn not to spit in the streets. Now, in one heartbeat, we have imported people who spit all over the place.

BBC has been reporting more on Spore lately & the news has been negative. When our "leaders" are interviewed they don't seem to impress Maybe its the harsh light, poor makeup or simply got nothing to say

Mandarin IS the language that bridges all the ethnic groups in China, which Singapore emulated to no wrong as well, together with the state language that is English. People can argue "why should we speak your dialect" to each other, so to put an end to it an imposition of Mandarin is necessary. Just like the use of Malay, and then English as a main language of communication between the races.

To diss the common Chinese language of communication which is Mandarin by a Chinese, is disgraceful. And just because the Kuomintang lost in China and crawled over to dominate Taiwan doesn't give you any justification to talk down on your own people's common language either. Mandarin in China, despite the political systems adopted and changed to, remained as the bridge language and studies were made assiduously to come up with simplified characters to make learning the language easier and to improve the literacy rate of the country further. Culture DOES have a lot to with what is going on. If the country of the culture is coming into power, you get in early and LEARN their language, main or dialect, like what has happened before and what is going to be now, even if you are NOT of their country or culture.

All those who understand what I mean do also know that, Chinese in some other countries who want to learn their own mother tongue, much less the mainstream Mandarin, aren't even ALLOWED, like in Indonesia during that babi orang Suharto era. The Chinese there can't learn Chinese, they can't have Chinese papers, and they can't EVEN have CHINESE NAMES!!! Thankfully we heard things changed a bit when Habibie took over.

So people should be grateful the situation in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries is more liberal.
