Current Citizen Regrets
Don't miss Singapore
Ten years ago, I left Singapore for overseas countries for personal reasons. At that time, I didn't think about giving up my Singapore passport/citizenship because I still have attachment to my family back home. I have never considering buying property in the new country I am staying. I really enjoy living in Jesus country where the society is much free and people don't pursue many materials things like in Singapore. And many people can enjoy good welfare from their governments. I was really happy to have this new found freedom! The government really treat their residents nice and people are well taken care off. After the my recent father death in Singapore, I felt my link to my country is starting to break up. I really felt disconnected to the country now. I felt there is no point keeping my Singapore passport now.
To validate my feelings for Singapore, I keep asking myself, what are the reasons to stay in Singapore? Maybe because of food? This is the only attraction for me to stay. There are many other negative factors like hot and humid weather, 44 years of one man rule with you die your business type of governance, skyrocketing HDB property prices and pursuits of materialism in a society is not healthy for my children and my family.
The coming opening of CASINOs really put a damper on my desire to remain a Singaporean. What kind of society are we turning into? A society of Sins of greed and lust? All these factors really came up to my mind when I desire if I wanted to remained in the country? Even if I lose my job overseas, I don't really wished to return to a country where people have completely different values as mine.
Values of money, greed, and self interests doesn't provide a good environment for my children to grow up with. Like 孟母三牵story.
I don't really enjoy living in densly packed country with so much crowdedness. I prefer the lush green and peaceful countryside, where miles and miles, you couldn't see a high rise building sticking out like a sore thumb. It is so lovely and relaxing. The air is really fresh and you are really living!!!
People are more relaxed, they have good family values, people don't work for money but for pride and their family. Houses are compartively cheaper and cars are a bargain!! Imagine driving a new car by just paying only US$10K! You are not saddled with so much debts that your fellow compatriots are showing on their sad faces everyday you see them in office!!
So after much thought, I think it's time for me to give up my Singapore passport, when the times come, and I will have no regret. If I missed Singapore just for food alone, I may consider coming back as tourist someday.
Where my family is, is where I call it home.
A Singaporean living overseas.
Yes, where the family is, thats where the home is.
or
East or west, home is best.
This sentiment and emotions applies to all humans.
FTs , PRs, foreigners are also humans.
Now, coming to the letter posted. ( It has no relevance though, to the topic being discussed in this thread )
Well , we all have our own visions of what our family, home and country should be. Only a few are lucky to get their visions and dreams come true. Life is full of disappointments, crashed dreams and frustrated times.
Like they say, there is no way to satisfy an entire community or society. Those who are not happy and do have the resources, family connections and networks will always move out to other pastures while others will stay put due to lack of it.
The world is changing dramatically and changing fast. It may be appropriate to remember the words of a futurist called Allan Toffler.
" The future belongs only to those who are willing to unlearn what they know and then learn anew "
Ignore this at our own peril.
