S'pore's bus terminals were once chaotic and stuffy

Singapore's bus terminals and bus stops were once chaotic, stuffy and warm affairs.

There were no queue poles for commuters at some stations and passengers could easily cut queues. There were also no information which let passengers know how long more before the next bus came.

There were also no air-conditioners to beat the tropical heat, leaving commuters to sweat buckets while waiting for their transport.

The terminals were also usually located close to nearby hawker centres and public toilets, leading to a wide range of smells assaulting passengers' noses while they waited in the sweltering heat.

However, transport authorities did their best to provide for a comfortable location for commuters. Slowly, information panels were installed to let passengers know when the next bus would come, as well as marble-top benches for commuters to rest their legs.

There were also entertainment and information kioks for children and other passengers to browse through, providing some relief against the boredom of waitin for buses in humid and hot weather.

Slowly, Singapore's bus terminals evolved into organised, air-conditioned places where passengers could grab a bite or rest their weary feet while waiting for their next bus.

It also became a meeting point for people, as bus terminals were increasingly built near amenities such as supermarkets, community centres and housing areas.

Community or non-profit organisations also used terminals as exhibition areas, sometimes organising roadshows or small fairs to attract commuters.

Why never feature the bus terminus of the 80s & 90s? It was still very good & airy & not crowded with dogs & shit!

Consider the source: the article was penned as propaganda.

At least in the past there weren't many foreign trash at the terminals, only true-blue sinkies.....and we lived thru and survived the inconveniences.

it becamee crowded and stuffy again(and mrts too) when they let in ONE MILLION FT's during the 2000's

oh... the non air-con double decks... can take a look of the streets by popping our heads out of those windows... catch a peep at the colored bras of the chio bu alighting or boarding the bus if you got the right seats... once in a while we hear the "krrrauuuww-Ptui!" :p:p:p

I have always been puzzled why the government does not invest in building a decent Bus/Coach Interchange for coach companies plying long distance travel into Malaysia and Thailand.

Is it because all these coach companies are Malaysian businesses so they don't give a sh*t? And why are there so many different pick-up/drop off points for coaches to Malaysia. So confusing and a bit of a shambles, just have one central designated Interchange.
Quite frankly, I find Golden Mile Complex a bit like the old Tanjong Pagar railway station - old, run down and not fit for purpose, whether you're local, foreign worker or tourist.

what I heard is from now till NDP 2015 u will get to read and see alot of these propaganda in the form of newspaper articles, TV dramas, documentaries etc. that play up the past in order to invoke a sense of nationalism and pride. Of course the underlying message is to let the audiences know who they should give credit to.

No one in the PAP is interested in a Mysian bus interchange because there is not enough money in it for them.

Going to Malaysia is very convenient. My 1st choice is to go to the travel company at Novena for buses. Take a look http://www.myexpressbus.com/firstcoach.html

actuarry, me quite impressed wif kl's south bound buzz station in tasik, selangor ...

I rather like some of the old interchanges, which had plenty of open spaces and were quite breezy.
The new ones are air-conditioned, but it almost seems as if you are still in the shopping mall.
What is progress to some is a loss of history to others.

Pick pockets must be really active during those chaotic and stuffy bus terminals.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the PAP for transforming the bus terminals from hot, chaotic and stuffy shitholes to the modern, clean and efficient terminals that we have today.

i wonder what the age of this asiaone essay writer. the old school terminals maybe chaotic but no way they were stuffy as all were open concept, no walls, just some pillars holding up a flat roofs. as for long waiting period for buses in the past, it still the same nowsadays. my neighbourhood feeder service average waiting time ard 20-25min. if traffic condition bad during peak hours, can wait up to 40mins, so compare to past, sbs didnt make much improvement.

i like the old school bus interchange of the late 70s and 80s, much easlier to locate the bus service i want. one of fav interchange was the bedok central, many bus services within 100m and have meehoon and curry puff seller ard 9pm. sometime had the occasional turtle eggs seller in the 80s/90s.

old school bus terminals were not hot and stuffy but latest bus terminals are hot and stuffy due to the design.
