Youth Olympics Games' briefing disappoints agencies

SINGAPORE - The eagerly awaited Youth Olympics Games (YOG) briefing recently turned out to be disappointing for agencies after the Singapore Youth Olympics Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) revealed it is on the lookout for a creative agency to sponsor the games.
What this means for agencies is that instead of being paid for their work they will need to work on the brief free of charge. Most agencies invited to the briefing said they were surprised to hear of this unusual arrangement.
“I am not sure how you make this kind of thing work. I guess it’s the sign of the times,” said a source who didn’t want to be named.
Most agencies are not likely to give much thought to this idea as the returns still remain “ambiguous”.
“From their point of view, the returns could be the visibility of working for a high profile event like the youth games and access to other budgets etc, but they weren’t really clear about it.”
One agency head said that it is unlikely that agencies will take the bait and spend a million dollars worth of time. “In the current economic scenario when the cost is important it’s highly unlikely unless an agency has expectation of winning some business in future.”
Last year, Singapore won the bid to host the 1st Summer Youth Olympics Games edging out nine other cities. The games will bring together approximately 3,200 athletes between the ages of 14-18 from around the world in high-level competitions in Singapore. YOG will follow the traditional cycle of four year and the sports programme will encompass all 26 sports on the programme of the 2012 Summer Games, with a limited number of disciplines and events.
A few weeks ago, SYOGOC announced that it is partnering with Changi Exhibition Centre, which would be the official exhibition venue of the games. The organising committee had also signed a Memorandum of Intent (MOI), Deloitte Singapore under which Deloitte Singapore will be the official consultancy services provider for YOG.
