Youth Olympics Games' briefing disappoints agencies
by Asiya Bakht 10-Mar-09, 11:19

SINGAPORE - The eagerly awaited Youth Olympics Games (YOG) briefing recently turned out to be disappointing for agencies after the Singapore Youth Olympics Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) revealed it is on the lookout for a creative agency to sponsor the games.

What this means for agencies is that instead of being paid for their work they will need to work on the brief free of charge. Most agencies invited to the briefing said they were surprised to hear of this unusual arrangement.

“I am not sure how you make this kind of thing work. I guess it’s the sign of the times,” said a source who didn’t want to be named.

Most agencies are not likely to give much thought to this idea as the returns still remain “ambiguous”.

“From their point of view, the returns could be the visibility of working for a high profile event like the youth games and access to other budgets etc, but they weren’t really clear about it.”

One agency head said that it is unlikely that agencies will take the bait and spend a million dollars worth of time. “In the current economic scenario when the cost is important it’s highly unlikely unless an agency has expectation of winning some business in future.”

Last year, Singapore won the bid to host the 1st Summer Youth Olympics Games edging out nine other cities. The games will bring together approximately 3,200 athletes between the ages of 14-18 from around the world in high-level competitions in Singapore. YOG will follow the traditional cycle of four year and the sports programme will encompass all 26 sports on the programme of the 2012 Summer Games, with a limited number of disciplines and events.

A few weeks ago, SYOGOC announced that it is partnering with Changi Exhibition Centre, which would be the official exhibition venue of the games. The organising committee had also signed a Memorandum of Intent (MOI), Deloitte Singapore under which Deloitte Singapore will be the official consultancy services provider for YOG.

This will be the final outcome.

Govt Depts are the biggest spenders in media advertising. Ad agencies that previously won sizeable contracts will eventually buckle and a compromise will be reached to save Vivien Balakrishnan and Teo Ser Luck's face. One agency will end up being the token sponsor but paid work will also be given.

but paid work will also be given.

That's a good one, heard of many sports associations when it comes to operating an event; many actually spent less on man power. Most will prey on the volunteer's passion to their sports and pay pittance for their time spent. Or worst , treated worst than a bangla in the name of sports.
Even paid helpers knows nuts about the sports and usually end up as a burden in the process.

Just watch for it in YOG 2010; lots of cockups, screw ups, you name it they will have it. Whether its reported its another issue. Singapore is not known to be first for nothing in anything.

They really think Creative Agencies are morons to take up the bait?

We have creatives freezing, agencies retrenching, agenices cutting pay..
and the government have to cheek to ask them to sponsor?

What is the whole point of doing it pro-bono when returns are little?

:o  :o

Interesting point and true. F1 has plenty of volunteers from around the world that pay their own fares, accommodation and expenses just to be in the event usually as marshalls and dogbodies. There is a CEO from a financial institution from UK that does it. The marshal that got killed by a flying wheel in Melboure was a volunteer and holds a day job as an engineer.

Thats the reason why Bernie E always has a smile on his face.

The moral of the story:

1) don't wear a big hat if don't have a big head,
2) don't bid the game if you don't want to deep into your pocket,
3) ..and expect ppl will work for free,
4) there is no free lunch..MM already warned,
5) don't celebrate too early if you don't know what's ahead,

I'm happy for Moscow who has the last laugh :p:biggrin:
