Man says he's a volunteer, so how come he's selling products?

man_says_hes_a_volunteer_so_how_come-thumbnail.jpg

A STOMPer said this man first told her he was a volunteer asking for donations to help ex-convicts and less fortunate school children, but then later said he was selling some products.

Said the STOMPer:

"This guy was seen at Ang Mo Kio Hub, saying that he is a 'volunteer', asking people to 'donate' to help the ex-convicts and kids to go to school for the new year".

"And he said a 'kind donation' will be good for helping them.

"When asked if they are approved by NCSS, he said that they are not asking for donations, but selling some kind of sales products or sales programme.

"So can he earn some commission?

"The card that he is holding has the name 'Appentice Connection'.

"He is seen at Ang Mo Kio Hub, near the NTUC entrance."

Volunteers shouldn't be paid for selling charity tickets

volunteers_shouldnt_be_paid_for_selling_charity_tickets-thumbnail.jpg

A STOMPer was shocked and annoyed when she found out that a charity ticket she had bought on the streets might be subject to 30% commission paid to the volunteer who sold it to her.

On the National Council for Social Service site, an information page states that collectors could be paid a commission of up to 30% of proceeds.

She wonders if this is ethical especially since the collector she spoke to claimed that the organisation was only giving him money for transportation.

In an email dated December 24, she says:

"I was at Raffles Place this afternoon when this guy approached me:

"He said: 'Hi, I am helping The New Charis Mission to raise funds.'
I : 'Are you guys paid?'
He : 'No, we are not paid. The mission only gives us a small token for transport, one dollar only.'
I : 'Ok, ( I bought one thicket from him for $10)
He : 'Thanks, any other queries, please call the number on the stub.'

"I went online to NCSS' website to check out this charity and to my surprise, on the lowest part of the page, it is stated that part of the proceeds (up to 30%) to be used as payment to collectors.

"This information is not even on the piece of paper that the guy holds or on the stub that he sold me.

"I read everything on the stub as I have been cheated before by something similar.

"Where is their integrity? Why don't they tell us up front, print it on their posters and stubs?

"The sales person even lied to sell the ticket, why would he do that? Does he get $3 for a ticket sale?

"Why should people pay to donate when 30% of proceeds are paid to the collector? Is that why they are so hard-sell?

"Are they salespeople, volunteers or conmen in disguise?"

I knew majority of them(90%) are scams way back in 1990s when I stopped donating after being told not to probe further about how some charities are run. Basically all full of cheats. They only tell you 30% goes to collector. BUT they hide the fact that another 60% goes into others pockets( another 30% to useless managers and hanger ons, 20% to accountants, PR managers, telcos for dialling in, etc , 10% to adverts, etc), ultimately only 10% goes to the poor like what they discover in NKFF during that durian days. Full of sh!tty people in charities nowadays just like in USA.

Haven't Sporeans learned anything from the Durai/NKF scandal

if one is seriously sincere in doing charity, there are many instances where he can do so around him. I believed he can see many unfortunate peoples who need help. Giving money to these so-call Charity institutions are just for shows or trying to tell others that 'look, i am giving to Charity so i am a kind person'.

Why these so-called Charity institutions can still survive is because they prey on the conveniences of charity creating a false impression that the people donating their money are directly used to help the needy when in actual fact it is not. There is no easy way to do charity. donating money is not if you ask me. It all boil down to sincerity and with sincerity comes actions to help others. Paying money is just giving the donors a false assurance that they are doing good deeds

Ask them to go and sell their products or get their donations near parliament house.

One should not be indifferent to charities of one does there is no hope for humanity!

A few points for discussion:

1. Are the people on the streets asking for donations salaried, volunteers or on commission? If the latter, is it right that they should get a cut of what people donate?

2. Noticed more and more people asking for donations at mrt stations, bus interchanges and shopping malls lately. Should they not be going to places where rich people gather, like private clubs, high end restaurants, turf club, parliament house, etc to ask for donations?

Rich people pay for privacy at places where they hang out so as not to be harrassed by such people

Rich people go to restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets, etc etc. They can be asked there. In my opinion, it's not the rich people who are trying to avoid these people asking for donations. It's these people who feel that it is inconvenient to ask the rich people, who tend to ask more questions and have more resources to follow up if these is indeed a scam.
These charity organizations are just not getting it, by getting these young punks on commission to get donations for ordinary people. Firstly the young punks tend to be rude. Secondly, they are going for volume and more commissions, hence they tend to treat potential donors as atms, not people. Thirdly, they are asking people who may be struggling financially themselves.

Singapore has enough fools to hold and sustain another 10 more mega Churches!
