SPH English websites draw record-high views

MORE people are logging on to the English-language websites of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) for their daily dose of news and lifestyle and entertainment stories.
The month of January saw 5.2 million unique visitors to straitstimes.com, AsiaOne, Stomp and RazorTV, boosting total page views to a record high of 80 million.
The four websites also scored record-high page views in the same month.
Social networking and citizen journalism website Stomp recorded the highest jump with 57 per cent more hits last month than in December.
This upward trend looks set to continue with the launch of the Stomp iPhone application on Wednesday. The free application allows users to not just view the contents of Stomp but also contribute stories, photos and videos on the go.
Since launching their iPhone applications early last year, straitstimes.com and RazorTV have attracted sizeable audiences through the smartphone.
Last month, 17 per cent of straitstimes.com total page views came from people tapping on their iPhones.
Said straitstimes.com editor Joanne Lee: 'The Straits Times Online app is one of the top downloaded applications in the Singapore iTunes store.'
News and lifestyle portal AsiaOne has also seen sharp growth month to month.
'AsiaOne's record level in eyeballs and unique visitors is due to the fact that we have been quick to respond to the content demands of our readers,' said AsiaOne's editor Adrian Tay.
Critical to this strategy is the successful launch of four new, rebranded lifestyle websites: SoShiok (food website), Diva (women's website), Plush (luxury website) and Relax (travel website).
Next to be launched: an education website as well as one on digital content.
Also keeping up with the times is the 100 per cent Singaporean video news channel, RazorTV, which went through a revamp in December.
RazorTV's focus on hyper-local news has seen it break talking-point stories like the controversial exclusive interview with disgraced beauty queen Ris Low that went viral.
Commented RazorTV editor Jonathan Ng: 'One of the reasons for RazorTV hitting record video views recently can be our unique angling of stories that makes them compelling for our viewers.'
Said a regular RazorTV visitor, marketing executive Low Soo Fern, 31: 'It's like a Singapore YouTube access to news.'
'I watch it on the way to work,' added the iPhone user.

The Communist Party of China is the largest and most popular political party. I wonder why. I heard the same thing about Iraq's Baath Party before the second gulf war.
