<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A FORTUNE teller who fleeced a woman of $60,000 - promising her everything from a promotion to winning the lottery - was sentenced to 15 months in jail yesterday.
Tan Ka Chuan, who operated from a makeshift stall at Woodlands Centre, told the woman he had the power to predict the future and could perform rituals that would protect her family and make her wealthy.
In return, Madam Lee Lye Fong made regular payments to the Malaysian national over the course of five years, including a sum of $28,888 in January 2004, according to court documents.
Tan promised to hand over the money to his 'Master', who would ensure that Mdm Lee win the 4D lottery and earn a promotion.
Instead, the 36-year-old Tan used the money to pay off his gambling debts.
At one point, it is alleged, Mdm Lee even resorted to dipping into funds from her employer to pay Tan, and became the subject of a police investigation.
During the probe, police learned about Tan's bogus promises.
He was arrested when he entered Singapore via the Woodlands Checkpoint on Nov28.
He later admitted to the police that he had no powers to see the future and did not perform any religious rites. SUJIN THOMAS
