This one very unusual. Nothing like the Muslim Philippine movement which has elements of banditry. When I first heard about, I too thought it was the usual separatist movement or minorities rebelling against the majority to get a share of the pie. Even Thakshin when he was PM attempted to resolve and appointed an Muslim Army. chief for the region. It not only did not resolve the matter, the army chief led the coup de tat years down the road.

Thats why, the lesson to be learnt is, never appease these terrorists and their separatism. Kill them all.

The lengthy write-up and analysis at one point came to this observation:

A striking aspect of the South Thailand insurgency is the anonymity of the people behind it and the absence of concrete demands. Thailand held relatively free elections in February 2005, and no secessionist candidates contested the results in the south. However, requests of cultural and religious freedom and the right to use the Yawi language have been presented numerous times. In July, the chairman of the Narathiwat Islamic Committee was quoted as saying, "The attacks look like they are well-organized, but we do not know what group of people is behind them."

Another very interesting paragraph mentioned:

The Council for National Security, which seized power from the elected government in 2006, claimed to have evidence that the insurgency is being financed by restaurants selling Tom Yam Kung soup in Malaysia. The Malaysian government argued the claim "absolutely baseless," and "very imaginative."

North Malaysia hawkers sell Tom Yam soup as a-matter-of-factly for centuries. Mee Siam was adapted from Thai sweet-and-sour gravy too, just replacing kway teow with beehoon. Even give a thought, what does Siam means. It means Thailand.

Some book on the history of malaya I read said that during the Jap occupation, the Japs handed over some of the northern states - Kedah, Perlis, Trengganu - over to the Siamese as gift and "reward" for letting the Jap Army cross over without any resistance to Malaya when they were sweeping down from IndoChina peninsula. It must be during this time that Muslims lived and farmed freely across the present borders, and when the borders were sealed again after the Japs surrendered, these tribes must have been caught between.
