SMRT Taxis seeks to revise fares following Comfort DelGro's lead

By Lin Wenjian
SMRT Taxis submitted papers containing proposed changes to its fare structure to the Public Transport Council (PTC) last Friday.

The move comes after Singapore's largest taxi operator ComfortDelGro announced its revised fares last week. It operates about 16,000 cabs.

SMRT Taxis, with more than 3,000 cabs, is the third-largest operator here after Comfort and Trans-Cab, which has 4,300 taxis.

A spokesman said the company will be making a formal announcement soon.

A check with the other four cab companies - Trans-Cab, Premier, Smart and Prime - showed they have not submitted similar proposals to the PTC.

ComfortDelGro's new fare structure takes effect on Monday, with several changes that will result in most passengers paying more.

Flagdown fares will increase by 20 cents for most taxis, and by 70 cents for limousines. Meter fares will go up by two cents per fare band, over a slightly longer distance.

Peak period will be lengthened in the morning from 6am to 9.30am, compared with 7am to 9.30am before. The evening peak hour surcharge will now also apply on Sundays and public holidays, and run from 6pm to midnight, compared with 5pm to 8pm from Mondays to Saturdays before.

However, the surcharge will be reduced from 35 per cent to 25 per cent of the metered fare, while the $1 public holiday surcharge will be removed.

The $3 city surcharge from 5pm to midnight will apply on Sundays and public holidays as well, and current call booking fees will be 20 cents less than before.

Those looking to book cabs in advance will pay more: $8, compared with $5.20 before.

this is nothing, one of my taxi friend, age 50+, still train every morning. i nicknamed him "fighting chicken" aka sio pa kuah. he damn solid, and he like to wear army kind of clothes. sibeh hero! :D

Yeah, ppl got fetsih for army clothes, u got fetish for desker or changi V ah quaz. Ok I understand.

I am not sure but once on a ride to the airport, I had a conversation with a SMRT taxi driver. He works only 10 hours and Sundays off. He said that he used to drive a Toyota Hybrid but gave it up since it takes a long time to fill it up because of the queue. His earnings is more like 4k and he brought up 2 kids and they are in their 20's one having completed "U" and the other still there.

One thing he said which makes sense is that he starts before peak period ending about 3 pm with lunch in between. Goes home and then start again 3 hours later and finishing about 8 pm. No relief drivers he says as nowadays it is not necessary plus no hassles of having one who can be troublesome.

finally get to read the article.

the guy earn 3K a month becos:

a) he drive a mercs cab - flag down, meter rates r all higher
b) he has a group of stable clients who will book his taxi..meaning, a large % of his salary is based on fixed bookings
c) hard work (he drive like 12 hours a day)

now, if we work out the sums, its tough job. And don't forget the detrimental effect on health - sitting for long periods, sometimes have to lun urine / shit, continuously exposed to air con...

thus, the secret is to secure a client base that will "book" you for their routine trips. I once came across a cabbie who told me, he has a stable client who flies frequently, so, everytime he has to go airport, he will take his cab. And they have an agreed rate - meaning, he don't use meter.

Another cabbie told me, he earn extra by ferrying tourists to Geylang, earn a tip from the turtle head here, and also wait for client to finish bonking before driving them back. Or he act as guide for some hotel / restaurant to earn tip.

sidelines....some I heard are referrals for ah longs.
