A jumper has killed a 5-year-old girl, crushing her as he jumped to his death from the 11th floor of an apartment building in Busan, South Korea.
The incident has shocked locals, and has highlighted the increasing problem of suicide in South Korea, which has now become the country with the highest suicide rate in the world.
Police in Busan have reported that a 39 year old man jumped to his death on Wednesday from the 11th floor of the apartment building. He is believed to have died instantly but landed on the young girl who was walking with her parents on the sidewalk outside the high rise building.
The girl was rushed to a local hospital in the southeastern port city, but later succumbed to her injuries, which included brain damage and numerous broken bones.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, and according to The Associated Press the official who gave details of the tragedy refused to give his name. The officials did, however, indicate that as yet there is no known motive for why the man jumped and committed suicide.
Eye witnesses described seeing the man jump from the building, but authorities have confirmed that there has been no suicide note found as of Friday afternoon.
