Soldiers' 'Facebook warning'
They are cautioned not to form online groups or reveal sensitive info
By Tan Weizhen

NATIONAL servicemen have been discouraged from forming online military groups on the popular social networking website Facebook.

Notices circulating in camps warn soldiers about Facebook's 'dangers' and caution against revealing sensitive information about army life or posting photos taken in camp - especially during training - on their own Facebook pages.

The warnings first appeared a few months ago, several servicemen said.

Such Facebook groups, formed mostly by soldiers from the same unit to help them stay in touch and share photographs and information about training and activities, are getting more popular.

A check found at least 17 such groups, with between 100 and 400 members who discuss everything from uniforms to social activities and experiences in camp.

One serviceman said the notices in his camp display screen shots of existing local military groups on Facebook.

'They basically talk about the dangers of 'Facebooking', and how there is a risk that SAF information might fall into the hands of terrorists who might be lurking in cyberspace,' said the 21-year-old, who would not identify his unit.

He added: 'We've been warned many times before not to share sensitive information on such new media platforms. But the approach now seems to be: 'Just don't do it'.'

When contacted, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) would only say that all 'Mindef or SAF personnel are not to disclose or post classified or sensitive information and photos online'. The rule applies to reservists as well.

Details about operations, equipment and certain types of training are among the types of information considered sensitive or classified. Those who are unsure about the rules 'should always consult their superiors', a Mindef spokesman said.

US army who are in the forefront of almost every war in the 20th and 21st century happily talks about whatever new gizmo they have in documentaries.

Are we to believe that SAF, who have never been to war, too humji to fight pirates and can't even catch a Matland bandit wandering around Tekong have weapons more top secret and powderful than the Americans?

Is Singapore Technologies building a Gundam or X-Wing fighter?

the most effective weapon in fighting an urban warfare will always be a souped up pickup with a GPMG accompanied by AK touting soldiers, one or two can carry a RPG.

The pickup is nimble and out maneouver any tanks or fighters (talk about stealth). and with the weapons, it pack quite a punch, can do gureilla warfare perfectly, come out of nowhere to hit the enemy and quickly slither away.

don't believe ask Taliban or Iraqi gureilla fighters.

Don't you know bro we're building a state of the art ship for ferrying our august and revered political leaders to flee Singapore to safety once a war breaks out? Its probably built with cloaking and stealth technology

MSN?? i think u refer to the IVIS system, which allow individuals vehicle to communicate without any radio tranmission. Basically a screen which show the map terrain, mounted in the vehicles, it the vehicle commanders to input data into the screen as per he seen, then all the data will be "share" to every vehicles in the unit. And all vehicles will be track by GPS which allow the unit commanders to know what happening in the front.

US Army already had that for some time, i think i remember seeing 154th report that SAF implementing this system to the 42th SAR a couple years ago. Not sure how it work as they are not giving us reservist units, especially those about to MR. But i got credible info that there are still bugs in the system as SAF is cheapo again by trying to develop the software themselves instead of buying off the shelf.

.....don't believe ask Taliban or Iraqi gureilla fighters.

They learnt this from the Somalis outlaws who outgunned, outmanouvered and decimated the US elite Army Rangers sent to fight them  ...... fyi, this tactic was developed by the Russkies who taught them to the Somali warlord to counter the Americans :p  :p
