Soldier dismissed for setting man on fire

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Jakarta | Mon, June 30 2014, 7:38 AM

A Indonesian Military (TNI) soldier, who was named a suspect for extorting and setting fire to an illegal parking attendant at the National Monument (Monas) last Tuesday, was dismissed from military service over the weekend.

The Jakarta Military Police, in a press release, said that the initial investigation had resulted in a confession from the suspect, First Pvt. Heri.

Heri has been detained at the Army Headquarters in Central Jakarta while the victim, Yusri, remains in intensive care.

The suspect’s dossier has been submitted to military prosecutors; he has been charged with violating Article 354 of the Military Criminal Code on aggravated assault, which carries a maximum eight-year prison sentence.

Heri will stand trial in early July. “Pvt. Heri also received the additional punishment of dismissal from military service,” Army chief spokesman Brig. Gen. Andika Perkasa said as quoted by kompas.com.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said recently that the suspect had extorted illegal parking attendants and street vendors.

Following the incident, the City Police deployed armed officers to crack down on illegal and thuggish behavior at Monas, with six people arrested so far.
