Attorney-General - V K Rajah

SINGAPORE: Judge of Appeal V K Rajah has been appointed as Singapore's next Attorney-General.

He takes over from Mr Steven Chong, who will return to the Bench as a Judge of the High Court after completing his two-year term in June this year.

The appointments were announced by the Prime Minister's Office on Monday.

It said Mr Chong was instrumental in making a number of changes to the criminal justice system in the last two years.

He had also taken steps to engage the public in explaining the work and significant decisions of the Public Prosecutor, for example, through the Public Prosecution Outreach Programme.

Among other things, the statement also noted that under Mr Chong's leadership, the Attorney-General's Chambers played an instrumental role in the successful conclusion of key international treaties.

Chief Justice (CJ) Sundaresh Menon noted that Justice V K Rajah had made immense and significant contributions after more than a decade on the Bench, and congratulated him on having completed a "remarkable" stint on the Court.

"Justice Rajah leaves the Bench after more than a decade of distinguished service during which time he made immense and significant contributions to the jurisprudence of the Court,” said CJ Menon.

“He also discharged a number of important assignments and led several committees that resulted in significant and ground-breaking changes to the profession and also to the administration of justice in Singapore."

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

Son of TT Rajah - left wing lawyer who was jailed for 18 months under the ISA.

He was involved in politics from the mid 50s and was very disappointed when he was not arrested as part of operation cold store. He was insulted because LKY obviously did not consider him to be a threat.

He finally got his wish in 1974 and he spent 1.5 years in the Whitley Road detention centre made famous by the limping Mas Selamat. He died a happy man

You are right again Mr leong. He was also once a partner of Rajah & Tann. ;)

is this consdiered punishment?

Punishment or not, the facts speak for themselves.

Mr Steven Chong from High Court Judge appointed AG
Mr VK Rajah from Judge of Appeal appointed AG.
Even if there is no demotion, there is also no promotion.

He actually died a bitter man. He never forgave the old man for a number of things including making him stateless. A few years before his death he penned a letter that showed how bitter he was. He was the counsel for many of the detainees and for acting for them, he was detained without trial and stripped off his citizenship.

In the scheme of things, AG is most powerful as he is the only one that can sanction prosecution. It is considered more political than the judiciary. You can be CJ but you cannot do anything if the case is not presented in the first place. Though in society the judge highly regarded and revered.

I wonder if this is an attempt to clean their image or to address the disasters over the CPIB cases? All CPIB cases must have prior sanction from AG for each and every case unlike many criminal cases where a blanket sanction applies.

VK as GD has pointed has thrown the most number of cases and the operating principles were questioned. They probably thought that VK would be best positioned to fix it and rather than the usual 2 years, he was given until retirement.

IF VK thought it was a demotion or a slight, he could walk out the very next day and start doubling his salary overnight. CJ and VK are very close so this strikes me more along the lines of cleaning the legal service practices. CJ is known reformer albeit very quiet profile wise.

Yes, both CJ and VK are good buddies.

I am just surprised they are prepared to have VK as AG. This chap is not known to be obedient and compliant. It's a risk Pinky and company are taking with eyes opened. May end up with problems associated with WW when he was AG.
