in that movie there were two emperors who were also brothers. denzel’s character was that of a provincial governor somewhere in north africa. the grandson (the protagonist) of a late emperor was hidden there near his domain by his mom but became a gladiator groomed and championed by the provincial governor who supplied gladiators to rome. in the movie macrinus attempted to usurp the throne but was killed trying to steal it.
