SNEF : Jobs still out there but with lower starting pay

Jobs still out there: survey

Despite the looming job squeeze, the S'pore National Employers Federation (SNEF) said there are still jobs for fresh graduates.

SNEF says there are jobs for fresh graduates in Singapore

Channel NewsAsia - Friday, November 7
SINGAPORE: Job creation in Singapore’s labour market may be moderating, but the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) said there are jobs for fresh graduates.

SNEF president Stephen Lee told Channel NewsAsia on Thursday that a survey of 100 companies by the federation last week showed that about half of them were still hiring. Another 40 per cent of the respondents had frozen their recruitment plans and the rest were reducing their workforce either through retrenchment or natural attrition. Hozefa Aziz and his friends, who are currently in the University Scholars Programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS), often discuss about their future job prospects, and their concerns are growing stronger with the present economic downturn. "They are worried about the types of jobs they can get and whether the jobs will pay enough to lead a generally comfortable life," said Hozefa, a Life Sciences undergraduate. Tan Mei Shi, a Business—Finance undergraduate, NUS, said: "Right now in my industry, we have a lot of retrenched investment bankers from Singapore and other countries who are looking for jobs everywhere, and you are competing with these retrenched people who have years of industry experience. It is very hard for you as a graduate to make that mark." The recent SNEF survey showed that jobs are being offered by accounting firms as well as service, IT and healthcare companies. The SNEF chief said there are still job opportunities out there for new graduates, but they will probably have to moderate their salary expectations. In most cases, starting salaries are expected to remain the same. Mr Lee also noted that between the first and third quarters of this year, job creation has been at a healthy level, although it has moderated by about 20 per cent. "In Q1, we saw job creation of 73,000 going to 58,000 in Q3. Going forward, we expect this moderation to continue. But let me just add that at 58,000 for Q3, it is still a fairly respectable job growth," he said. Fresh grads are advised to take up job offers even if the salaries offered are slightly lower than what they are expecting. Mr Lee also said there should be no let—up in the hiring of older workers. "We should not let a short—term economic downturn interrupt our longer term policy," he said, adding that the rate of hiring older workers may moderate with the needs of the job market.

More poly engineers find jobs within six months of graduation

More poly engineers find jobs within six months of graduation

Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, October 28
SINGAPORE: Engineering graduates are in high demand, and those from polytechnics are highly sought after in recent years, said Education Minister Ng Eng Hen.

He said 94 percent of engineering diploma graduates found jobs within six months of graduation. Dr Ng was speaking at the launch of the annual Engineering Week recently. He cited a recent survey by the polytechnics which showed that fresh engineering diploma graduates earn about $1,930 on average, with those who have completed National Service earning about $2,200. The five polytechnics — Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic — organised the event to encourage more secondary school students to take up the subject. Innovative projects by students were also showcased at the Engineering Week fair. One of the projects featured was a bicycle which actually runs on thin air. Hydrogen and oxygen from the surrounding air are converted into electricity which powers up the bicycle. There is no emission, and the only by—product is water. The project was designed by three final—year electronics engineering students from Temasek Polytechnic. The green bike has caught the attention of a Swedish company which is keen to acquire the fuel—cell technology. Allen Gong Ji Yi, Final Year Student at the Temasek Polytechnic, said: "For old people who want to go to the shopping mall, they can use this bicycle to get there. They can save energy, there is no pollution and it is totally clean. "This is clean energy and can help protect Singapore as a garden city. For example, fuel—cell motorcycles, golf carts and even fuel—cell boats, are used in public transport. I believe that fuel—cell technology will lead the world in future." Another project highlighted was a stethoscope which picks up a heartbeat and converts the soundwave into digital signals. With this device, doctors will be able to detect abnormal heartbeats easily.
The innovation from Republic Polytechnic is now used by doctors from Singapore General Hospital. — CNA/de

starting pay less, bcos of stiff competition from influx of FT.
if FTs can survive, so can you.

learn to graze like cows for starters, so NEA no need to hire FT grass-cutters.

sgporeans all stuck with financial liabilities even before they join the workforce. 80% of our local grads owe CPF when they pursue tertiary education.

starting pay already pathetic, and now need to settle for less, means the debts won't clear till at least 5-7yrs down the road. after 5-7yrs of slogging then manage to start fresh new page on their finances. how old liao?

teochew say : "muey sek liao!"
