Chitchat SMRT - world class transport system. We move you!

Having travelled on most of the Metro systems around the world, this kind of network wide failure has never happened to much older ones like New York or London which was built over 150 years ago (much less one that was built in the 1980s).

The whole Board needs to go NOW!

SINGAPORE: An “intermittent power fault” caused delays on the North-South and East-West Lines for more than five hours and led to a temporary suspension of service for eight stations on Tuesday (Jul 25).

The delays began at around 6am, and at 11.30am, train service was shut down on the East-West Line between Queenstown and Bugis stations – in both directions – for 30 minutes for "urgent repair works", SMRT said.

"Engineers have traced the fault to a loose panel next to the tracks in the tunnel near Tiong Bahru MRT station. As engineers require track access to remove the panel, traction power needs to be turned off for safety," it said in a Facebook post.

SMRT first posted on its Twitter account about the delays at 7.26am, saying that the fault was causing trains on both lines to run at longer intervals. It also warned that stations would be more crowded than usual.

However, commuters started complaining about delays at least an hour before SMRT’s tweet. Commuter Wayne Chia, who was at Buona Vista station, contacted Channel NewsAsia at around 6.40am saying that there were no trains arriving at the station for 10 minutes.

Crowds and long queues were also seen at other East-West Line MRT stations such as Lakeside and Bedok.

Twitter user @settpaing posted photos of long queues at Lakeside station. No announcements had been made and the station was “extremely overcrowded”, he said.

Isn't it wonderful how the prostitute mainstream press can sugarcoat bad news.

A power fault that brings the whole network down for hours is a MAJOR fault by any measure. However describing it as "intermittent" means it's no big deal and the bigwigs still deserve their million dollar salaries.

As for the suspension if it isn't TEMPORARY then it has to be PERMANENT which would mean kissing the whole MRT system good bye forever. Of course it's temporary. If it's 2 minutes it's temporary. If it's 5 hours it's temporary too. If it's 5 YEARS it's still temporary and a small blip in time compared to the age of the universe.

The press thinks most singaporeans are idiots and they are probably right.

Looks like smrt is in such a mess that no one knows where to begin trouble shooting. Will we see more frequent and massive mrt breakdowns?

Where is big mouth Khaw Boon Wan? What can he say now?

Live with it. No amount of engineering can prevent breakdown. No shutdown good liao

.u expect emperor leee controlled prostitute mainstream press to provide honest factual report ?
tantamount to own self slapping own self .

The press thinks most singaporeans are idiots and they are probably right. -- Of course they are right.
they know that 70% are credulous.

I am glad that like the good Anton Casey, I depend on my car for transportation. The stench of poor people on the mrt today must be overwhelming!

Chaos theory, the SMRT is heading towards systemic collapse.the next breakdown will last for 24 hours mark my words.

In all complex systems, there is an underlying chaos theory.no matter how man seeks to impose order and structure into man made systems and predict and control outcomes, chaos and mother nature threatens to undermine that order.

In the first iteration, drawings of the fractal curve remains simple and few clues to the mathematical structure remains to be seen.

2nd iteration, the fractal curve is redrawn and self organizing elements emerges, the pattern becomes more complex and detailed.

By the 3rd iteration, swiftly emerging complexity hides the underlying risk of chaos.unexpected changes appear.

4th iteration, underlying instabilities begins to appear, elements shows internal conflict.

5th iteration, flaws in the system becomes severe, risk to survival becomes severe.

6th iteration, unstable system collapses in multiple regions, survival is now unlikely for individuals and groups.system may be unrecoverable.

new bart trains from bombardier having problems with signaling and electrical power. delay expected till past 2020. supposed to be launched next year, over 699 cars. 69% of the content made in china by bombardier partner. majority supposed to be done in the factory in ny. as usual, corruption and lack of due diligence run deep in u.s. transit authorities. right now, issues happen everyday with old trains and tracks that they are no longer news. the fact that smrt can identify the root cause within 6.9 hours is a godsend. over here, can't even pinpoint the root cause of a power surge issue plaguing the entire system including knocking out trains for the last 6.9 months. sinkies must thank their lucky stars they have less than 6.9 hours of delay to contend with.

Are you describing the MRT or the PAP ?
