IS SMRT INQUIRY ITSELF AN IMPEDIMENT TO THE COI BEING SET UP BY GOVT, BY PROMISING "TO SHARE THE RESULTS OF ITS INTERNAL INVESTIGATION". IS IT VERY PRODUCTIVE AND GOOD FOR OVERALL STAFF MORALE FOR STAFF MEMBERS TO BE INVESTIGATED TWICE FOR THE SAME 'OFFENCE'? AND HAVING ITS OWN 'INDEPENDENT' DIRECTOR MAY NOT BE CONDUCIVE FOR GETTING OBJECTIVE FEEDBACK FROM STAFF.
JUST WHAT IS GOING ON? WILL STAFF BE INTIDIMATED INTO GIVING RESPONSES WHICH WILL PROTECT MANAGEMENT? AND WHY ARE THE OTHER 'EXPERTS' NOT NAMED AT THE SAME TIME? FROM TV SCREEN SHOTS, MR ONG WAS SEEN LAUGHING ALL THE TIME - IS HE SERIOUS, AFTER LOSING IN ALJUNIED AND WENT BACK TO HIS OLD JOB?

CNA

SMRT has appointed its independent director Ong Ye Kung to head an investigation team comprising external experts and internal resources to conduct the investigation into the root causes of the disruptions, adequacy of its emergency response and the required remedial actions.

This is an internal investigation separate from the COI and the team will report to the board.

Where issues are identified that require action, the board said it will take that action, and it promised to share the results of its internal investigation with the COI.

SMRT said the disruptions last week have shown the rail operator needs to improve on its emergency response and management procedures, as well as how SMRT communicates with commuters and the public in an incident of this scale.

SMRT said it hears the public's concern in this regard and it will move quickly to implement learning points that have come out of these disruptions.

Some immediate actions and improvements have already been taken, but SMRT acknowledged more needs to be done, and it will do so.

Chairman of SMRT, Koh Yong Guan, said: "My colleagues and I take the disruptions and inconveniences caused to our train passengers last week very seriously. The board will spare no effort and resources to ensure that SMRT earns back the confidence of the commuters and public. We apologise to the travelling public for the disruptions and inconveniences in the last week."

These chiak liau bee directors apologising after ONE WEEK?

http://www.smrt.com.sg/about_us/board.asp all members or connectedto, to make the public trust them & bring back trust to SMRT, they mus use an indpendent ombudsman.

Getting this, was he the Aljunied GRC loser? Ong Ye Kung is not a very good PR move...they still think that we are Donkeys!:p

Depending on the objective/s of the investigations. If investigating the whole corporate from top down, then even an independent director is inappropriate because the independent director whole have been involved in the decision making process at board level, or any secondary appointment in any management committees. But this is an investigation on the internal operations for whom the independent director was not involved in any management committees taking part in management decisions, it would still qualify as independent. But definitions of independence varies:o

A seperate team for the COI should be performing the investigations from top down of the organisation from board level to the extend of the aforementioned investigation team.

But who is gonna audit the investigation process? Is the investigation report made available to all members of parliament for review before conclusion :confused:

So many COIs then suddenly this Internal Investigation team popped out of nowhere... Many brains, many ideas but end result will still be the same... There will still be Train breakdowns in the coming future and Saw Phaik Hwa would still remain as CEO.. This is my humble opinion on one of the causes of these frequent MRT breakdowns.. Trains are too overcrowded and can't take the increasingly massive load of commuters.. Its just too overcrowded in Spore.. PAP must shoulder the blame for the Influx of these foreigners that put a major stress in all of our transport system.. You rarely heard of MRT breakdowns back in the 80s and 90s..

PAP is really insulting our intelligence again. Ong Ye Kung is an independent director on the SMRT board but he is not independent from SMRT or more importantly from the PAP. Only a person that is totally independent from the SMRT and the PAP will be able to conduct an absolutely transparent investigation. Ong Ye Kung was the losing PAP candidate in Aljunied and the Deputy Sec-Gen of NTUC. What independence is the PAP talking about?

On the contrary, it's an opportune moment for Ong to shine and be in time for 2016. Saw is surely going to get the boot anyway, so what better time than for PAP gov to score points as well. But I think Ong won't be sent back to Aljunied but even so he needs to be remembered for something else rather than an Aljunied loser and become a liability, so this may do.

i agree...PAP tried to polish Ong's image so much before the erections. Since he lost, PAP now gave another chance to helm the investigation & make a name, thus boosting his CV.

The BOD already said as much, Saw is responsible for everything -meaning Ong is going to sign the death warrant.

Those aren't just directors. They are INDEPENDENT directors. Apart from the CEO, they come from all walks of life and are in no way beholden to the owners of SMRT.

Take a look for yourself.

http://www.smrt.com.sg/about_us/board.asp

They will definitely act in the interests of the commuters.

are u being sarcastic?

independent or not, would he not be part of the board that passed previous resolutions, approvals and whatnots that relates to the way smrt is run?

would he not be keen to absolve smrt of blame as it would be to the detriment of his reputation?

I too believe that Ong won't will be sent to a safe place and then take over as Secretary-General of NTUC.

SMRT as a whole does not seem to be able to make good decisions.

While some may argue that it is common practice for firms to appoint IDs for internal inquiries, the crux of the issue is:

- SMRT is no ordinary company, it is a GLC;
- Singapore is not a normal country, with some choosing to call it a corporatist state;
- Ong Ye Kung is not your "regular" Independent Director.

A better choice of person *perceived* to be a) more neutral and b) an outsider in all senses of the word would have helped a tiny, tiny, tiny bit in the company's fight to climb back up from the pits. Pity.

I agree with u that PAP is using this incident to revive Ong's chances for the next GE. But my post was not related to his prospects at next GE or PAP's strategy for that. I was simply stating that for SMRT to appoint an independent director from its own board, and what's more an important PAP member, where's the independence needed so badly for an investigation of such nature. Doesn't it insults our intelligence?
