About 30 per cent of the 1,900 bus drivers employed by SMRT are from Malaysia or China, said an SMRT spokesman.
The SMRT spokesman made the revelation when commenting to a query by Straits Times on its recent recruitment drive. SMRT recently held a recruitment drive for bus and SMRT drivers in NanJing, China.
The reason provided by SMRT for recruiting from overseas was that it is getting difficult to find locals to fill the vacancies.
As Singaporeans are becoming better qualified with higher career aspirations, it has become increasingly difficult to attract them to become service leaders.

=> Say, how has the pay been then and now?

In 2011, a similar recruitment exercise on a much larger scale was also conducted in Xi’an, China where hundreds of Bus Captains were recruited.

At least for the PRC Bus Captains, when they were recruited, they got to attend a pompous and grandiose ceremony and, no doubt, with refreshments and nice “makan” too. Do Singaporean Bus Captains get such treatments when they were recruited?

[h=2]Tharman: Singapore will remain OPEN to ‘foreign talents’[/h]Posted by temasektimes on April 6, 2012
Despite promising to reduce the ‘inflow’ of foreigners, there will be few major changes made to the exist immigration and labor policies, revealed Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Speaking to a group of NUS students at a forum conducted by the NUS Political Association, DPM Tharman said Singapore must stay open to foreign talents or end up losing them leading to an eventual loss of competitiveness.
Using the example of Taiwan, DPM Tharman said the average salaries of the Taiwanese has declined steadily in the last ten years because of the country’s closed-door policy to foreigners leading to an exodus of Taiwan’s brightest minds overseas.
He added that more and more Singaporean talents are relocating overseas too and if Singapore does not have an environment to allow Singaporeans to work with the brightest foreign talents, it may end up like Taiwan one day.
When one man from the audience said that foreign graduates depressed the starting pay of fresh graduates by accepting lower pay, Mr Tharman replied:
“Singapore will continue to remain open to foreign talents as stopping them from coming to Singapore will make things worse and lead to decreased competitiveness.”

My mother always said .... beware of man in white!

MIWs sell snake oil and speak with forked tongue!

The more PRCs the better, we should welcome them wholeheratedly and integrate them

Good for the economy and good for social stability

We should have another 1.5 million mainlanders to take our population to 6.5 million in the next ten years

I love China, the motherland!

To make you happier, me think you are at least 0.5 million short of the magic number.:o
