According to the show, he chose to go china to help build up the new china. His family member was interviewed and said he went alone as China conditions were basic and he didn't want them to suffer with him. When he died in Beijing, the china govt gave him a state funeral from Beijing to Jimei.

Most sinkies I meet feel that LKY is the father of modern singapore, the Singapore as we know today. Singapore in 1819 is considered ancient history to most sinkies.
 
Raffles was the father of modern Singapore. LKY is the father of the state, the republic of Singapore. if your modern Singapore starts from 1965, then LKY is your founding father.
