Six A1s and four A2s - but failed to win a place in first-choice JC

'Six A1s and four A2s - but failed to win a place in first-choice JC'

MS TOH SIEW TIN: "I agree with Mr David Goh ("O-level's A-level disadvantage: Have more IP schools") that the Integrated Programme (IP) has created a space crunch in Singapore's top junior colleges (JCs). My daughter scored 10 distinctions - six A1s and four A2s - but failed to win a place in Hwa Chong, her first-choice JC.Read more:
» Many other good JCs for late bloomers
» Don't leave out late bloomers

"Distinctions in two additional subjects, Music Elective Programme and Higher Chinese, give no added advantage over IP students. Naturally, I regret not enrolling her in the IP or channelling her to the direct school admission programme earlier.

"Perhaps Hwa Chong or the Ministry of Education can explain why she failed to gain entry to her first-choice JC?"

'The cut-off point is calculated using the L1R5 scoring system, and not the number of distinctions attained.'

DR HON CHIEW WENG, principal, Hwa Chong Institution: "I refer to Ms Toh Siew Tin's letter on Saturday, "O-level disadvantage: Six A1s and four A2s - but failed to win a place in first-choice JC".

"We congratulate Ms Toh's daughter on her good performance. The cut-off point is calculated using the L1R5 scoring system, and not the number of distinctions attained. This scoring system takes into account the student's first language (L1) and five relevant subjects (R5), which must include at least one from Mathematics, Science and Humanities.

"Each school's cut-off point varies from year to year, depending on the number and quality of applicants who apply under the Joint Admission Exercise. This year, Hwa Chong's cut-off point for both the Arts and Science streams is three.

"This includes bonus deductions for passing Higher Mother Tongue and outstanding Co-Curricular Activities records. We regret that not everyone who puts Hwa Chong as his first-choice school was posted to us. We wish Ms Toh's daughter all the best."

'There must be something amiss if a student must score three points or lower to qualify for an elite junior college.'

MR PHILIP TAN: "I refer to Hwa Chong Institution principal Hon Chiew Weng's reply on Monday. There must be something amiss if a student must score three points or lower to qualify for an elite junior college.

"Is this the result of the Integrated Programme in which schools admit most of their students after the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), thereby depriving capable students who may be late bloomers of a chance to enter such schools?

"The successful students who did well for their PSLE are assured of an education in an elite school up to the A levels. This, I assume, will eventually leave few places for equally capable students."

6A1 + 4A2 called 10 distinctions? jurassic period is it?

this kind of result can forget about NJC/RJC and HCJC....

What if the market be so huge . That every other girl on the street is a sex worker . Where will it bring us ?

You thinking crooked man, I am not talking about sex worker, I am talking about natural pro-creation...good at " ", so that we can have more to replace an aging population...why study so hard...stay at home and be a 'producer'...

It's not cheap to have more than 3 . Besides it cost different family differently depending on feed .

What if at home she finds she is getting better at what she do .
Since with husband and boyfriend, she will hit a wall somehow .
And maybe why not make money from it at the same time .

Go for the garbage ACJC then. You would only need money to get in. It's that loose.

People with sub-par or no academic ability like your daughter should just accept their lot in life and move on. She is just not good. Don't you get it? There is no need to try representing her by creating lots of background CO2 to the press and to everybody cos it doesn't change a thing. About her uselessness.

Since she's so bright she should use the her O level results to get into a Uni in Canada, Aust, US,..

Knew someone who did that & returned to Spore to do NS, with double majors. As a girl it's easier to do without worrying about a bond.

johnny333 of course can bark for all he wants like an angry (but stupid) dog but as usual we are not listening.

Despite being abroad for so long he still talks like a child against the establishment when he finally returns. Not worthy of my attention.

Obviously you are reading my posts AND even responding :D

Don't have to be shy about agreeing with me. :)

Don't you think its smarter for this student to just by-pass the Spore education System & simply go to an overseas Uni? It'll save $$$ & time and allow her an early start in looking for greener pastures.

It's not going to get any better in Spore.

Spending more might not be a solution or rather sometimes the only way out .

More will jump !

How many Sporeans are actually planning on getting a local degree:confused:

As a local you will be paying more than the foreigners. I disagree on the cost. Costs outside Spore is cheaper.

In my case I spent less than $5,000 on school fees(4 years) by attending a Uni in Canada  That is $5,000 for a 4 years program. Don't what it is today but it must be cheaper than Spore.

The Spore gov't is aware how much cheaper it is overseas. They have sent many teachers to the same Uni. I met some of these Spore school teachers, PRC scholars, african scholars,...

His place is probably taken up by some PRC FTrash who could hardly speak Engrish, etc. Thanks to the 66% GOONDUS who think of nothing in giving the PAPee Traitors blank cheques like free tampons!

If only distinction grades could be translated into fat bank account figures!

While the rest of the world learns about innovation backed with real life experience on the ground, our kids tear their hairs out trying to squeeze their asses into some ill fitting uniform.

Of course, no one will tell them if they look back at their farcical behaviour 10 years on, no one except the uniform vendor will be laughing his way to the bank!

The cut-off point for both science and arts for Hwa Chong is 3, after cca and loyalty bonus (whatever that is). That's amazing.

How many points did her daughter get? From the Ministry's reply, I would guess that her daughter's point is 7 at the lowest, with no CCA and no loyalty bonus. 7 is very far from 3.

I gather that Hwa Chong is the best junior college around....? Amazing students.
