Singaporean’s Honda Civic Type-R Car Apparently Stolen In SkyAvenue Mall in Genting Highlands

With Causeway borders open again following a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Singaporeans are eagerly enjoying holidays in Malaysia again.

However, certain precautions should always be taken overseas, as a Singaporean man found out when he drove to Malaysia with his girlfriend and two other friends.

After his Honda Civic Type-R car was stolen in a mall in Genting Highlands, the 28-year-old appealed to Malaysian police, and then social media in a bid to find his car.

The car is apparently worth about S$220,000 by the owner’s estimation.

Singaporean’s Honda Civic Type-R stolen while parked in Genting Highlands mall on 15 Jul

Speaking to AsiaOne, Damien Yeo, the car owner, said he parked the car at SkyAvenue Mall in Genting Highlands on 15 Jul, but found that it’d gone missing the next day.

After combing the car park for two hours, he made a police report and decided to stay in Genting Highlands until 17 Jul in case his car was found. Sadly, there were no leads on the location of the car.

Apparently, someone had driven his car out of the premises at about 2am on Saturday (16 Jul).

According to a screenshot showing a WhatsApp conversation between two undisclosed parties, the car was sighted heading towards Thailand on an expressway, although this cannot be confirmed.

An appeal was posted on the SG Road Vigilante page on Monday (18 Jul), which has since garnered more than 1,300 shares at the time of this article.

Despite the appeals on social media, Mr Yeo apparently isn’t hopeful that he’ll find his car. He’s also unsure if he can make any insurance claims.

Drive overseas at your own risk

While the incident in question is rather unfortunate, perhaps the wise thing to do in hindsight would’ve been to ensure there’s sufficient insurance coverage or practise additional safety measures.

We hope that Mr Yeo will be able to find his car or get some form of compensation if the vehicle is indeed unretrievable.

"Lost items are not our problem": First World Hotel management

Realising then that his car might have been stolen, Damien informed First World Hotel management to see if they would be able to help.

However, Damien said that apart from sending out the motorcycles to look for his car in the car park, the management was "not helpful at all".

"When we first reported the theft, they literally replied: Oh? Your car hilang (missing)? Report police there, lost items are not our problem," recounted Damien.

The Malaysian police were also unable to find Damien's car.

The Malaysian police checked CCTV footage, which showed Damien's car being driven down the Genting Highlands mountain at around 2:43am on Jul. 16.

Another CCTV screenshot provided by the Malaysian police showed the thief driving Damien's car out of the SkyAvenue car park by tailgating another vehicle through the exit.

Car showed no signs of being broken into despite being locked

Damien said the CCTV footage of his car showed no signs that his car had been broken into, as all the doors and windows of the car appeared intact.

Damien said he had locked the doors, and performed a manual steering lock by turning his wheel fully after parking it to prevent it from being towed.

He estimated that his Honda Civic Type R is worth S$220,000, and added that he spent a lot of time and effort on his car.

"Expensive lesson learnt on behalf of all Singaporeans and car owners. Please be safe when travelling everyone!", said Damien.

Damien was also apparently told by Malaysian police officers that another car, a Malaysian-registered Toyota Hilux, was also stolen from the same car park a day before his own car got stolen.

Mothership has reached out to First World Hotel for comment.

Arrived at Genting Highlands, Malaysia on 15/7/22. Car was parked at SkyAvenue's carpark. When I went
to retrieve my car at the carpark on 16/7/2022 evening, I realised that my car was stolen from the parking
lot.
I have since lodged a police report at Malaysia's police station and cctv footage showed the car being
driven down from the genting mountains at 16/7/22, 2am

Aside from gambling at one third of bankroll in genting casino, is the price of restaurant food actually cheaper or same after conversion to sgd?

No idea, but I reckon prices are at tourist rates aka chop carrot. Have not been to Genting in decades but most go there for the cooler temp.
