A Singaporean family of five has complained to Lianhe Wanbao that Gardens by the Bay is not meant for local visitors because of the high cost of entry.
Admission to the Gardens’ ticketed attractions costs $105 for the whole family.
Most of the Gardens are free, but to visit the two conservatories and the OCBC Skyway, individuals would have to pay $20 to visit two conservatories, and $5 for the Skyway. Children pay $12 and $3, respectively.
Tan Jin Fa, a 50 year-old taxi driver, wanted to take his wife and three children, who are aged nine, 10 and 15, to visit the newly opened Gardens by the Bay. However, he balked when he found out that the trip would set the family back $105 for entrance to the two conservatories and the OCBC Skyway.
Mr Tan said that to pay more than $100 for a family to visit a park seems unaffordable for common folk. He said he rather take his family to the Botanic Gardens instead.
Local admission fees to the Gardens’ ticketed attractions are already priced cheaper for overseas visitors. Foreigners have to pay a total of $28 per adult and $15 per child to enter the two conservatories. There is no distinction between locals and foreigners for Skyway rates.
The local rates apply to Singapore citizens, permanent residents and holders of various permits including employment passes and work permits. Holders of PAssion Cards, NTUC Plus! Cards, SAFRA Cards and Home Team NS Cards get an additional 10 per cent off admission rates.
Mr Tan added that Gardens by the Bay, just like the Singapore Flyer, is something that locals will probably visit only once or twice. He said he has yet to pick up any taxi passengers who have asked to go to the Gardens. He feels that with these admission prices, the Gardens really cater to tourists only.
Bay South which covers 54 hectares is open daily from 5am to 2am. The conservatories and skyway are opened from 9am to 9pm.
