SINGAPORE: In the first such prosecution in Singapore, two men were charged on Tuesday (Dec 5) with renting out four units at a condominium for short-term accommodation via online homestay network Airbnb.

The minimum rental period for private homes in here is three months, meaning typical short-term lettings on platforms like Airbnb are prohibited.

Terence Tan En Wei, 35, and Yao Song Liang, 34, face four charges each under the Planning Act.

Both are expected to plead guilty to the charges in January.

They are accused of letting out the units situated in three different blocks at D’leedon Condominium at 9 Leedon Heights in the Farrer Road area without the permission of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

The premises “was occupied by the same person(s) for a period of less than six consecutive months in return for the payment of rent,” in breach of regulations, court documents stated.

Between 2014 and 2016, URA investigated more than 1,000 private residential properties for breaching the minimum stay duration. This equates to an average of about 330 properties a year.

In contrast, URA has already investigated about 600 properties from January to September this year, almost double the number investigated for each of the past few years.

Under the Planning Act, it is an offence to convert the use of a property for short-term accommodation without URA’s approval. First offenders may be fined up to S$200,000, and in the case of a continuing offence, to a further fine of up to S$10,000 for every day or part of a day during which the offence continues after conviction.

JohnTan should join in the raid! If everyone starts airbnbing, our hotels are going to close shop one by one. Very bad for economy. We the citizens of Singapore must prevent all condo owners from abusing the Airbnb platform. To these lazy condo owners, please go and get a real job instead of getting easy money from Airbnb.

I know of a US guy who has been offered a senior product position with Airbnb in the Singapore Office and he has signed and serving his notice period with his current employer. Poor chap and he is bringing his family over.

I'm sure there's already a tie up with Temasek to let airbnb operate under a Pap approved business model

They probably did not realise the dynamics in this country politics wise. Look what Grab did. Overnight NTUC Comfort was thrown under the bus.

I don't think a few taxi drivers matter much to Madam Ho. This is the only direction SInkapore economy can go now... Offer ourselves as a petri dish to foreign "disrupters" because our own start up initiatives failed.

Knowing sinkies, I don't see any political risks. Taxi drivers complain like bitches now but they will still vote for Pap when Comfort offers them some sweeteners before the next GE. Just watch

Yep, agree.

This news has worried me. Thanks to Airbnb, I have been a successful hotelier for past few years. Why the fuck is the PAP government clamping down on airbnb but encouraging Grab and Uber?

The restrictions regarding rentals isn't unique to Singapore. Similar clauses exist in the body corporate rules of many apartment complexes in NZ.

The owners and long term renters in apartments do not want an airbnb unit in their midst because of the issues regarding noise, security and of course the inevitable introduction of vice into the mix. The majority have therefore added a clause that forbids short term stays of less than 6 months.

...anything that is NOT tax by the pappy is ilLeegal...in this country...btw does all the gov vehicles have COE???

Exactly....to use vice as a excuse too for not having AirBNB in Singapore is ludicrous. In that case ban all budget hotels too....especially those charging by the hour.

Ultimately it is all about how many money they can get out of it...need to fund the misdeeds oTemasek. Apparently all our CPF is not enough as yet.

Had a chat with a chap close to this space this morning after I saw the report. 15% of Singaporeans live in private Condos and apartments. 5% live in landed properties. Apparently the complaints went sky high. The authorities were surprised that it involved Sentosa Cove penthouses and GCBs. Enough political clout to rapidly move legislation in Feb.

Its good as dead now - airbnb.

To be fair, nobody want their home in the vicinity of temporary lodgings where strangers are commonplace.

Make the owners who want to make money through Air Bnb register with Singapore govermnent.

Not about vice or money. Both are holy for the PAP. It is about strangers, nuisance, privacy and the mounting reports of disputes and allegations from what I heard.

Yes they just need to tie up with Temasek and it’ll be smooth sailing.
Sg become like Indonesia of old....all businesses need to tie up with ruling Suharto family then can operate.

yes that's how Pinky and his Ho is preserving their power over SG. she will remain as commander in chief for the next 30 years and no one can do anything

Air BNB is a good move for cash strap owner.
Singapore government claims that they are always business welcoming, innovative, forward looking. etc etc ..

But in the end when it eat into their beloved hotels, they scream Thief. Thief need to be dealt with severely. Hence 2 Singaporean got the stick meted out.

simple solution. those interested in doing airbnb should pool their money together and buy up entire condos. that way no complains. entire condo run as airbnb setup.
