Malaysian is latest fatality of poisonous gas inhalation incident at Singapore’s Waterworks, says National Water Agency

https://www.malaymail.com/news/mala...-waterworks-says-national-water-agency/137119

SINGAPORE, May 29 — A 24-year-old Malaysian sub-contractor worker who was being treated at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) became the second fatality of a gas inhalation incident at the Choa Chu Kang Waterworks (CCKWW) last week.

Singapore’s National Water Agency (PUB) spokesperson said the man, who was working for PUB’s contractor Stargroup Est., succumbed to his injuries at about 10pm on Tuesday while being warded at the ICU.

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old Malaysian who was also involved in the incident has been moved out of the ICU on Tuesday and is in stable condition.

In the May 23 incident, three foreign sub-contractor workers were found to have collapsed due to the inhalation of hydrogen sulphide gas while draining sludge from one of the plant’s pulsator tanks, as part of tank cleaning work.

One worker was pronounced dead at the hospital on the same day, while two others were treated at the hospital’s ICU.

“PUB would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the worker. Together with our contractor, we are doing everything possible to support his family during this difficult period,” the spokesperson said in a statement, Wednesday.

PUB said it is cooperating fully with the Manpower Ministry’s investigation and is conducting a safety investigation of its own following the incident.

The spokesperson said as part of its safety timeout, PUB has been reviewing the agency’s safety protocols, especially those pertaining to work in confined spaces as well as reinforcing the importance of following procedures to ensure the safety of employees and contractor workers.

“We have been progressively lifting the safety timeout at worksites and plants where we are satisfied that the necessary and appropriate measures are in place,” the spokesperson said.

The CCKWW, located in the western part of Singapore, is the second largest waterworks in the country and has a treatment capacity of 80 million gallons per day. — Bernama

‘I’ve never had an asthma attack this bad’: Tourist hit with breathing difficulties after staying in Bugis hotel room with ‘mould’

A tourist from Australia had his trip disrupted when he suffered a serious asthma attack after his first night in Singapore.

In a post on Facebook group Complaint Singapore on Wednesday (June 5), Nguyen Luoi said he had booked a three-night stay at a hotel in Bugis via a third-party website. The hotel is listed as three-star online.

After checking into the hotel on Monday, Nguyen was given a room that did not have a window.

When he woke up the next morning, he said he experienced breathing difficulties which persisted throughout the day. He attributed this to the presence of mould in the room.

His post included a video of what looked like mould growing on the room's air-conditioning vents, which he believed had caused his asthma attack.

"I suspect the flimsy wallpaper also hides more mould as I've never had an asthma attack this bad," he wrote.

In a subsequent email to the hotel, he said that he did not bring along his asthma medication "as I have not had a use for it for a long time".

Nguyen did not reveal how much he paid for the room, but said that the listed price for it at the hotel's front desk was $190 a night and that he paid less through Booking.com.

At about 9pm on Tuesday, Nguyen saw a doctor and was prescribed medicine for his asthma. The bill came up to more than $300 and he said he did not buy travel insurance.

When he returned to the hotel, he asked to change to a room with a window, to which the hotel agreed.

However, despite taking his medication and moving to a different room, Nguyen's breathing issues persisted throughout the night.

"[The medication] has only provided mild relief. I still [had] great difficulty breathing," he wrote. "The mould seems to be deep in [the hotel's] air-conditioning system."

He wanted to open the window in the room for ventilation and approached the reception for help. However, he was told they did not have the key to the window lock.

Unable to bear with his breathing issues any longer, Nguyen checked into another hotel across the road at around 1am on Wednesday.

He expressed shocked at the state of the rooms he had stayed in as he expected more from Singapore hotels.

"In my homeland, the hotel would be shut down the next day until the safety and health breaches were rectified," he wrote in a comment under his post.

He said he had contacted the hotel to ask for a full refund for his stay, as well as $1,000 in compensation for his medical expenses and the harm caused to him.

"I hope you are willing to see the faults of your hotel here, the health and safety risk, and make an effort to clean out your air-conditioning duct system efficiently," he wrote.

A check online found that there are hotels in Singapore which offer windowless rooms.

On the website of the hotel that Nguyen stayed at, photos of its rooms show that there are windows and there was also no mention of windowless rooms. The listed price for a standard room is slightly more than $190 per night.

A check by AsiaOne found that Booking.com offers a lower rate for the same room at $100 per night.

The hotel has a rating of 3.5 stars on Google, with some reviews describing experiences similar to Nguyen's.

One guest wrote: "Reserved and paid for four nights, could only stand one night. With air-conditioning off, [the] tiny room was stifling (window locked shut) but musty air flows through mouldy air conditioner vent directly over bed. Woke up with sinus problems."

Another wrote: "The room smelled like mould... The air conditioner was noisy and the room was falling apart."

A number of reviewers took issue with the upkeep of the rooms and facilities, with some citing a lack of cleanliness and some others reporting faulty appliances.

AsiaOne has contacted Nguyen and the hotel for more information.

'Spiritual leader' jailed for cheating followers of over $7m, forcing some to eat faeces

SINGAPORE — A purported spiritual leader, who duped her followers into handing her more than $7 million and forced some of them to eat human faeces as punishment, was sentenced to 10 years and six months' jail on June 19.

Woo May Hoe, who had claimed to be a deity and had around 30 followers, pleaded guilty in May to three counts of assault and two cheating charges. Forty-five other charges were considered during sentencing.

The 54-year-old Singaporean headed a group that believed in spiritual leader Sri Sakthi Narayani Amma, according to court documents, which did not provide details about Amma.

She told her followers the monies would go to Amma's society in India. Instead, Woo pocketed the monies from 2012 to 2020.

Separately, Woo ordered several other followers to eat human faeces.

She was arrested in 2020 after some followers lodged police reports against her.

The DPP said Woo was found to be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the offences.
But an Institute of Mental Health doctor found no contributory link between Woo's mental state and her cheating offences.

Bus company's $5,000 salary offer for drivers draws over 1,400 applicants, 5 uni grads among 30 hired

A local bus company's salary offer of up to $5,000 for bus drivers has attracted over 1,400 applicants so far, almost half of them Singaporeans or Permanent Residents.

Private bus company Westpoint Transit had announced its recruitment drive in December last year, offering at least $3,500 for drivers of its medium-sized buses and $5,000 for those driving the 45-seater charter buses.

The already attractive offer was sweetened by a joining bonus of $7,500 or $10,000 depending on the bus size, with the requirement that they stay in the company for at least three years.

According to Shin Min Daily News on Saturday (July 27), all of the 30 successful applicants so far are Singaporean, including five university graduates.

Among them is Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) graduate Aeneas Liow, who joined the company in February.

Liow had graduated from SIT with a degree in air transport management, but he'd always had an interest in buses and driving, Shin Min reported.

Before pursuing his degree, he drove buses for transport service operators SMRT and ComfortDelgro.

At 28 years old, Liow is Westpoint's youngest employee so far.

"My father supports my choice of vocation but my mum thinks the job is tough with long hours. But I feel this is ultimately my decision to make, every job is tough in some way," Liow told Shin Min.

With the experience, the young man hopes that he'll be able to set up his own bus company in future.
