The four bus drivers said they are not concerned about the interchange being an active Covid cluster, they went on to say they are fully vaccinated.
The concluding paragraph of the article says, “The impact on the healthcare system is unlikely to be severe given Singapore’s high vaccination rate”.
Therein lies the great lie.
We have bought ourselves a false sense of security, that we have made much progress in the fight against Covid because more than 80% of the population has now been vaccinated, that we are on the road to becoming a “Covid resistant nation”.
Nothing is further from the truth.
When vaccines were first introduced here, the community cases were single digits. When Delta crept in and the vaccination rate was still low, community cases were usually below 30 cases per day. And yet now, with more than 80% vaccination rate, community cases are persistently above 100 and many more old folks are dying.
Are we lying to ourselves that we are “Covid resistant”?
The reality is that as vaccination rate has gone up, so too has infections and death.
In the bus-interchange clusters, almost all the infected persons are bus drivers and almost all of them are vaccinated and asymptomatic, and only picked up by testing.
Are they not walking time-bombs? God knows how many they could have infected in the course of their work.
The same is true in our hospitals. Almost all the doctors, nurses and other people working there are vaccinated. Like the bus drivers, how many of them are infectious but asymptomatic?
In the case of the bus-captains, the consequences of this false sense of security from vaccination may not be fatal as most people will recover if they are not old and do not have underlying diseases, but in the hospitals, it is literally fatal.
Both the 70 and 90 year old who died, as reported in ST today, were admitted to KTPH hospital for diseases not related to Covid, so presumably they were not infected before admission, yet they became infected.
From whom did they catch the virus? The persons who interacted most with them were the nurses and doctors.
Vaccination confers no protection from infection nor transmission. Not acknowledging these facts, which have been shown by actual events and verified by the US CDC, but instead perpetuate the lie by discriminating the unvaccinated, is simply going to lead to more infections and death.
We are living a great lie, and the sooner we realize it, the better it will be for everyone.
