Bosses Worried About Negative Effect Of AEC

By: Amos Seah, Singapore
Published: Nov 26, 2013

Singapore - An overwhelming 80% of workers in the region said they would prefer to work in Singapore under the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

This is according to a Jobstreet.com survey which looked into the concerns workers and employers have about the AEC, an initiative which aims to encourage easier economic cooperation and integration across the region from 2015.

The survey, which was conducted on a pool of 2,006 workers from various positions and industries, found up to 67% of them saw an overall possibility of finding a better paying job, with 52% of them intending to look for new job opportunities under the AEC.
However, not everyone is excited about the new community; 47% of respondents expressed concerns about the negative effects from job movement, such as losing their jobs to workers from neighbouring countries.

The survey also revealed one third of workers anticipated higher job turnover rates due to increased job opportunities as a result of the borderless job market.

Another third felt the AEC would leverage the labour quality and capabilities, "since the workers must improve their skills for new challenges".

An additional survey conducted by the company in early November on 267 employers, found 58% of them would recruit labour from neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, respectively.

"Everyone should think about preparing themselves for the competition in the job market, especially in English skill improvement which will undoubtedly become the main languages for the AEC," Thanaporn Satitpunwaycha, country manager of Jobstreet.com Recruitment (Thailand), said.

I told you all so.....more than 6 months ago.

Not only 80% of workers in the region...but also Ah Nehs (from India) and Ah Tiongs (from PRC) will be interested to work in Sinkieland. These two groups of foreigners will go to Burma, Laos and Cambodia to buy citizenship of that country. The current market rate is about US$3,000 per person. With their newly acquired citizenship they can apply for jobs in Sinkieland. No work permit or visa from LEEgime is required. This is the arrangement for Asean countries participating in the AEC.

Is it true? I can't believe PAP dare to do this. Not clear what is the final detail of the rule.

When I was looking at properties in Thailand someone did mention that AEC "could" make properties in LOS more attractive as there would be less red tape for people to move there.

In the case of Spore even without AEC the PAP has sold out Spore & Sporeans. I suspect that the PAP has plans for more than 6.8 million. Just look around & you will see all the construction going on.

That "someone" whom you talked to is either confused between "immigration" and "doing away with work permits/visas" or is deliberately hiding truths from you.

Please re-read the post made by the OP, PinkieSlut. In it it says eighty percent of workers in Southeast Asia prefer to work in Sinkieland, NOT Thailand.

To be able to work in Thailand, one must be fluent in Thai. (Ditto for Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, etc....) How many Asean citizens, other than Thais, can do that?

The AEC framework calls for FREE movement of services (read: workers that provide those services).

By FREE is meant unencumbered, NO work visas or permits needed from host countries.

It was an inadvertent slip, in August this year, by a PAP Press columnist that stated sinkapore's population will be 8.5 million in 2020, with at least 50 percent of it made up of foreigners. The backroom boys are planning for a higher population than publicly revealed. After the 2016 election, the new number will be revealed.
Comes 2015, our population will easily reach 6 million, with 50 percent of them comprising foreigners.

I'm not surprised about the 8.5+ million target only the gullible would believe the PAP would stop at only 6.8 million. I think we are already close to that figure now:confused:

For years the foreign population numbers were a closely guarded state secret and the only reason LHL revealed some numbers was because it was becoming too obvious, he couldn't hide all those extra millions of people speaking strange languages.
